Managing Director, Technology

The Managing Director, Technology will drive results within a mission-driven, high-performance culture by leading a diverse and talented team of staff across functional areas: architecture, data, dev ops, program management, software development, QA, user experience and digital accessibility. Reporting to the Executive Director, this position will facilitate the design and implementation of productive, efficient, and scalable systems for Harvard Business School Online platforms and development practices. This role requires exceptional communication, analytical, and technical skills; it demands carefully thought out, results-driven decisions that meet current needs and anticipate future growth in terms of servicing volume and accommodating new business models. The successful candidate will be a strong people manager who can “walk the walk and talk the talk” and coordinate efforts among expert technologists and interface with other technical personnel at HBS and across Harvard University. They will maintain consistent focus on accomplishing goals with speed while inspiring the highest quality work from the team.

Duties and Responsibilities

Senior Management Team Member

•Full responsibility for developing a high-level road map for leveraging current and emerging technology to support high quality customer-facing learning experiences and back-end administrative efficiency to meet strategic goals of HBS Online

•Continuous refinement of service model to deliver exceptional and scalable service for a varied menu of product lines while maintaining - or reducing - costs of delivery

•Assessment of the technological feasibility, approach, cost and timeline of new business model opportunities (e.g., white label of existing platforms, etc). Identification of the implications for core HBS Online products and operations

• Contribute to the overall strategy development of HBS Online

Key Functional Responsibilities:

•Work closely with HBS Online leadership team to develop and implement technology strategies that achieve the product development objectives of the organization. Help to balance quality and process while maintaining speed and innovation

•Oversee the prioritization of technology-related initiatives within the organization

•Oversee structure to bring business owner feedback and prioritization into work plans

•Provide leadership in resolution of high-priority technical platform issues

•Manage in-house and global outsourced teams, optimizing structure for cost, efficiency, and institutional knowledge

•Develop and mentor direct and in-direct reports

•Support school-wide technology planning in coordination with the school’s CIO

•Interface with external content partners to understand ways in which technology will support their needs and integrate those needs into technology roadmaps as appropriate

•Understand technology-related challenges and objectives in all areas of the organization

•Provide leadership in evaluating HBS Online’s digital security strategy and standards

•Advocate for alignment of technology related initiatives, business objectives, and key business strategies within the organization

•Facilitate productive collaboration and communication between technology teams and customer-facing departments

•Oversee the technology and software architecture activities of the organization including providing direction for architecting system redundancy

•Evaluate and communicate the pros and cons of technology strategy options to members of the organization

•Understand and communicate business objectives to the technical team

•Evaluate the infrastructure needs of business and customer systems and make recommendations for enhancements and improvements

•Assure the technology anticipates pivots in the business model and can adjust with nimbleness

Basic Qualifications

BS in related field and 10+ years experience leading teams

Additional Qualifications

Master’s degree or equivalent exposure to related fields preferred 

An understanding of digital accessibility requirements as they relate to consumer-facing technology and the development of digital accessibility-compliant products

Ability to thrive in a growing organization and support teams as they navigate change

Experience supporting a maturing organization via business process automation

Experience scaling and maintaining web and mobile products that serve 100k+ users

Modern information assurance and security techniques; experience with data security certification preferred
