ABOUT US

The Primary School is expanding the boundaries of traditional education. Our holistic model weaves together education, health, and family support services to ensure underserved children have the system of care they need to lead meaningful and emotionally, mentally, and physically healthy lives. The Primary School was founded in 2015, and we received seed funding by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a major national philanthropy.

Our approach has three defining characteristics:

  • We start early. We start working with parents and enroll children into our program as early as birth to reach them at their most critical stage in development.
  • We work with - not around - families. We know that parents and caregivers are the most important people in a child’s life. We partner with them to enhance the education and health of their children.
  • We integrate multiple systems to serve the whole child. Our unique model unites health care and education, building a multi-disciplinary team and holistic system of care around a child’s full needs.

In 2016, we opened our flagship school in East Palo Alto, California, with our first class of four-year-olds. We have grown to serve over 300 children and their families via a 0-3 parent/child program, a preschool and elementary school, and a parent wellness program.

Our ultimate goal is to create a game-changing system of care for children that can be replicated across the country. To that end, we are building a model that can be effectively implemented in diverse communities and sustained on public funding. In 2020 we continued to expand our student and family population in East Palo Alto and opened our site in Hayward, California. It’s an exciting time to join the team!

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Manager of Data Systems reports to the Vice President of Talent, Finance, and Operations, and is responsible for the design and maintenance of The Primary School’s data infrastructure to support program and function teams to make their data easily actionable. The manager will serve as a key organizational resource to define technical requirements, select appropriate systems and technology vendors, develop and maintain useful database systems and reporting tools, and perform data analysis. This Manager will also support diagnoses of staff information technology issues and requests.

Responsibilities:

Data Systems Management

  • Develop, articulate and promote a data infrastructure framework that supports school and program teams to track, manage, and easily use their data.
  • Work with stakeholders to identify current data needs to deliver efficient data management solutions.
  • Gather technical requirements through staff interviews and analysis of existing applications and databases, and distill into meaningful deliverables.
  • Evaluate technology and software vendors and products based on business and technical requirements and provide recommendations; work effectively with external vendors to implement, deploy and maintain data integration and reporting solutions.
  • Select and utilize appropriate tools and techniques to design and produce user-friendly, automated reliable data reports.
  • Maintain and enhance existing database systems and data tools.
  • Lead and conduct trainings on data concepts, how to use specific tools, and implement data processes, ensuring that staff have the resources and understanding to use systems as designed.
  • Work with internal and external IT teams as needed to address technical issues, and design and implement IT process improvements.
  • Perform other data related duties as required and assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in a technical field, preferably in computer science, data science or other related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Professional experience in building infrastructure frameworks and systems that support strong data collection and ingestion, storage, management and access, and analysis and visualization.
  • Experience with SQL, Python, Tableau or other related technologies and a desire to learn more about technical languages and systems.
  • Empathy for the users of data and strength in listening and communication.
  • Strong project and process management skills.
  • A strong desire to use data to help people make smart decisions, and experience doing so.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to learn new areas of knowledge quickly and thoroughly.
  • You believe in the mission of The Primary School and that all children and families are capable of extraordinary things.

A Plus If

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • ACMT certification preferred.
  • Strong relational database development skills: requirements, architecture, design, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of data warehouse concepts, including dimensional modeling and ETL tools.
