Localization Manager

Desmos - San Francisco, California or Remote - Part time

At Desmos, we build technology that helps students learn math and love learning math. The Desmos calculators package powerful technology in a beautiful and intuitive interface and are quickly becoming the standard way for students to explore math using technology. Desmos is built into the digital SAT, the digital ACT, the most popular e-textbooks, and the state exams in 30+ states. Last year, Desmos was used by ~40 million people, mostly in the United States. We hope to reach many more teachers and students outside the U.S. in the coming years and have begun investing in supporting this global growth.

One core requirement is ensuring our product and content are localized with care to be consistent with the Desmos brand and philosophy while also being useful and delightful for math teachers and students in their local context.

We are looking for a part-time role to help us manage the day-to-day direction and execution of our translation and localization efforts, with the possibility of building up to a full-time role that may also encompass our global content curation efforts and localized marketing initiatives.

What you should show up ready to teach anyone on your first day:

  • How you've ensured quality translations across multiple languages for a digital product.
  • How to keep a remote team of translators happy and consistently delivering quality results against timeline goals.

What you’ll learn more about after you’re hired:

  • The technologies and processes we currently use for translation as well as for product and content development.
  • Desmos’s core values and pedagogical philosophy.
  • Any necessary mathematical vocabulary.

Within your first week, you’ll:

  • Introduce yourself to your new co-workers on Slack, our internal messaging software.
  • Interview folks on our product and content teams to get a sense of our goals and upcoming priorities.
  • Start day-to-day management of our translation projects, including vetting and selecting new translators, managing existing ones, and quality review.

Within your first month, you’ll:

  • Complete a glossary and all contextual support for our translators.
  • Solidify our company’s brand “voice” in 4 non-English languages. Identify key word choices that matter for math learning by consulting experts and examples, including any regional differences within a language.
  • Design and implement a system with content and product partners so all of our future developments ship with localization embedded as a core part of the process.

Within your first three months, you’ll:

  • Successfully oversee the full translation and upkeep of our core assets (websites, web and mobile apps, and key content pieces) in 4 non-English languages.
  • Successfully test and train one or more quality translators for each of at least 10 languages.
  • Identify and recommend solutions for edge cases in global accessibility to inform product and business decisions (e.g., China, right-to-left languages).

Learn more about our company and apply today! Include your resume (and optional cover letter) that helps us understand your preparation for the work we’ve described above.
