The Learning Engineer will contribute to the process of applying learning sciences to Edmentum’s learning platforms with human-centered engineering design methods and data-informed decision making to support learners and their development. The Learning Engineer will be comfortable managing, extracting, and analyzing high volume, variety, and velocity data and will use modern infrastructure and analytic tooling to do so, adhering to best practices in data quality and privacy.

This position will entail close collaboration with colleagues in Learning and Assessment Design, Psychometrics, Content Development, Efficacy Research, and Data Science to execute upon Edmentum’s mission of creating successful student outcomes everywhere learning occurs.

The Learning Engineer optimally has knowledge of research methods, including design-based, experimental, and quasi-experimental designs. The Learning Engineer may be familiar all or a portion of learning science and psychometric research and modeling methods, such as knowledge state mapping, learning curve analysis, item and test level analyses, item response theory modeling, and computer adaptive testing. In addition, the Learning Engineer will bring experience with data engineering and simulation tools. If not already experienced, the candidate should be prepared to learn and collaborate on advanced methods of machine learning, AI, and natural language processing.

Here's what you'll do:

  • Apply learning science to inform, instrument, and validate online and blended instructional applications for the purpose of measuring and optimizing learning outcomes.
  • Extract, parse, analyze, investigate, interpret, and extract knowledge from high volume, velocity, and variety of data obtained from online and blended instructional applications and associated outcome measures.
  • Develop algorithms for measuring and improving learner outcomes using machine learning and statistical techniques.
  • Perform advanced queries on relational and non-relational operational databases using SQL and other query tools as needed.
  • Create and maintain analytic tools for the automaticity of analyses.
  • Establish data extraction methods across the organization in support of research and psychometric analyses.
  • Provide support and collaborative contributions for research and psychometric activities using appropriate statistical analysis, and contributing to technical documentation by way of quality assurance and output.
  • Manage timelines and data expectations for research studies and analyses, including coordination of data requests and extractions across internal stakeholders and schools/districts, and data agreements and exchange approaches that adhere to privacy standards and expectations of integrity.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Master’s degree in a quantitative field (Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Educational Research, or related program).
  • At least 5 years of experience in the use of scientific statistical and machine learning software such as Python or R. (Note that academic experience may count toward this requirement.)
  • At least 2 years experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS.
  • At least 2 years experience with relational databases such as Amazon Aurora, RDS, or Redshift.
  • At least 2 years experience with non-relational data stores such as AWS DynamoDB preferred.
  • Experience applying learning sciences to instructional systems, which may include implementing learning analytics, designing and implementing algorithms in adaptive instructional systems, or similar activities.
  • Work history showing a proven capacity for thought leadership in designing a learning engineering research study, executing it within established timelines and costs, and using the results to inform product decisions and to shape new and existing approaches in learning engineering.
  • Knowledge of research methods, statistics, and experimental design.
  • Experience in innovative analytics, such as deep knowledge tracing, social network analysis, cognitive diagnostic modeling, Bayesian methods, and use of non-traditional data architecture, such as graphical databases, preferred.

Specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities needed:

  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Experience extracting, transforming, and loading data for the purposes of scientific research and analytics from relational and non-relational data stores.
  • Experience using advanced statistical computing software. Industry experience using deep learning frameworks such as Keras, TensorFlow or PyTorch preferred.
  • Experience using code quality tools such as version control, unit testing frameworks, and integrated development environments (IDEs) preferred.
  • Familiarity with educational technology and current trends in education.
  • Passion for improving learner experiences and outcomes.

This role is open to any location in the US. Per the CO State requirement (EPT Rules): minimum salary of $88,000. The actual rate of pay may be higher depending on your skills, qualifications, and experience.
