Learning Engineer: Intelligent Systems Specialist

The Learning Engineer; Intelligent Systems Specialist (LE-ISS) will support the Learning Sciences, Measurement & Data Analytics department, which consists of a multidisciplinary team whose mission is to optimize teaching and learning experiences for diverse teachers and students. The department includes experts in applied learning sciences, assessment design, psychometrics, and data science and learning analytics. This expertise is leveraged to support the HMH mission to bring learning to countless students and teachers, transforming lives, supporting communities, and making our society more open, just, and inclusive for all.

The LE-ISS will utilize a deep understanding of learning principles, intelligent systems, and learner-centered design to influence and support the development of online and blended learning programs across disciplines that utilize learning progressions, computer-adaptive testing, formative assessments, content metadata, and recommendation engines in support of connected teaching and learning.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work with Subject Matter Experts, Curriculum Designers, Assessment Designers, Psychometricians, the Data Analytics team and Machine Learning engineers to provide expert guidance on the development, maintenance, and management of HMH’s proprietary learning skills architecture and other metadata tags. Guide the development of the implementation plan for integrating the skills architecture across the HMH portfolio of products. Support the development of content and grouping recommendation engines that utilize the skills architecture, a knowledge of learning progressions, and content metadata.

Provide learning sciences expertise to Product Development Managers and Learning Experience Designers based on outcomes of educational data mining and computational modeling of interactions provided by our data science learning analytics teams. Use insights gained to guide the creation of students’ skills profiles and determine effective learning pathways. Work across business areas to influence and support the creation of a data feedback loop as part of the product development life cycle in support of data-driven decision-making.

Research and evaluate emerging instructional technologies or methods. Report research results to a variety of audiences to highlight the meaningfulness of applied learning sciences in the product development life cycle and the desired outcomes of programs and platforms. Attend and present on the HMH strategic initiatives at regional and national conferences.

Collaborate with Research and Efficacy teams to build an efficient system for producing periodic efficacy reports for internal customers and the market, utilizing programmatic data.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • Master's Degree in learning engineering, learning sciences, learning technologies, cognitive science in education, or related field, with a focus on student learning of Mathematics and Science strongly preferred
  • Expert knowledge in a field related to the learning sciences, with a strong preference for expertise in intelligent systems, competency frameworks, learning progressions and/or recommendation engines
  • Deep knowledge of the role of technology in supporting learning
  • Proven track record of successful collaborative cross-functional project involvement
  • Adept at being creative, flexible, and innovative in solution design
  • Excellent written, oral, presentation, and interpersonal skills

Preferred:

  • At least two years of experience in a learning engineering, intelligent systems, or related position
  • Experience with designing teaching and learning environments
  • Proven ability to lead projects, including cost, resource, and schedule management as well as compliance and reporting

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to work remotely at a home-based office and travel to an approved HMH facility as required (minimal travel < 10%)
  • Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing)
  • Must be able to be on a computer or other digital devices frequently throughout each day
  • Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings
