Our Education team brings together a diverse set of technologists, Grantmakers, strategists and former teachers. Our objective is to enable every young person—not just the lucky few—to enter adulthood with the knowledge, skills, habits and ability to contribute to and thrive in a continually changing world.

CZI's education team supports harnessing the science of learning and human development to improve learning experiences for students at scale. This includes programs such as the Summit Learning Program, Village of Wisdom and Neuroteach Global.

We are seeking a dynamic and hardworking individual to be our full-time "Learning Engineer" to join our team. As a Learning Engineer, you will apply insights from the science of learning and development to the design and implementation of learning experiences, at scale. As a part of the learning science team, you will be working alongside a diverse group of learning science specialists as part of a larger drive for ecosystem change for evidence-based education.

In this role, you will work on a series of projects to bring the science of learning and human development to the design of K12 in-school learning experiences in the Summit Learning Program. You will also apply your experience in applying evidence-based insights, at scale, within mature product development and curriculum development teams. We’re looking for someone with experience developing or managing processes for applying learning science in the development of technology products, curricula (ideally, problem-based learning or personalized learning in K12) and teacher professional development.

You will

Summarize and frame research insights from the science of learning and development to inform early product development and product decisions

Collaborate with curriculum development and product development teams to incorporate principles from the science of learning and development into designs

Research, analyze, design, and review learning products and content

Support the continued development of a learning engineering infrastructure for the Summit Learning product, including refining processes for applying research insights into product requirements at scale

Build capacity, train, and spread learning science expertise across internal product and content development teams

Other duties as assigned by manager

You have

7-10 years of professional experience with PhD degree in Learning Science, Educational Psychology, Learning Design, or equivalent experience in related fields

Experience applying learning science and evidence-based development practices with EdTech or other product development/product design firms

Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication with the ability to build positive relationships and inspire change with non-researchers and internal partners

Impeccable attention to detail and project management skills

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities both independently and within a team

Ability to manage, influence and build positive partnerships with a variety of expertise and data types, and enjoy working to transform these into potential solutions that work within practical constraints

Experience managing teams of curriculum developers, instructional designers or researchers, preferred

Ability to travel up to 25% for conferences, EdTech organizations, school visits, etc.

About CZI

Founded by Dr. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg in 2015, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) is a new kind of philanthropy that’s using technology to help tackle some of the world’s toughest challenges – from eradicating disease, to improving education, to reforming the criminal justice system. Across three core Initiative focus areas of Science, Education and Justice and Opportunity, we’re pairing engineering with Grantmaking, impact investing, policy work, and movement building, to help build an inclusive, just and healthy future for everyone.

Our Values

  • We aim to be daring, but humble: We look for bold ideas — regardless of structure and stage — and help them scale by pairing engineers with subject matter authorities to build tools that accelerate the pace of social progress
  • We want to learn fast, but build for the long-term: We want to iterate fast and help bring new solutions to the table, but we also realize that relevant breakthroughs often take decades, or even centuries
  • Stay close to the real problems: We engage directly in the communities we serve because no one understands our society’s challenges like those who live them every day

Our success is dependent on forming teams that include people from different backgrounds and experiences who can challenge each other's assumptions with new points of view. To that end, we look for a diverse pool of applicants including those from historically marginalized groups — women, people with disabilities, people of color, formerly incarcerated people, people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or gender nonconforming, first and second generation immigrants, veterans, and people from different socioeconomic backgrounds.
