If you are an EdTech professional with a solid instructional design background and have a passion for building effective, engaging, and relevant materials with an ELA focus and/or for students and teachers in a virtual environment, then our Learning Designer position is perfect for you.

The Learning Designer will leverage our LMS platform, Canvas, to design and produce innovative learning experiences for both educators and students. Your educational insight, creative solutions, strong writing skills, and detail-oriented mindset will drive the success of our digital teaching and learning products. Creating interactive lessons, building professional learning networks, and guiding cross-functional development of digital materials to support AVID’s instructional methodology are a few examples of the work you will lead.


- Design and develop teaching and learning solutions within the Canvas LMS platform for our end-users.

- Assist in developing processes for automating enrollments, notifications, reporting, and organizing course learning paths.

- Experience with Learning Tool Interoperability (LTI) integration – how to review and add LTIs to Canvas.

- Develop instructional technology pedagogy and materials that map to our curriculum learning objectives. This may include creating media such as screencasts of how to use features in Canvas following AVID protocols, develop Module Zero content and resources for all courses, work the Publications to develop a Style Guide and general guidelines to be used with Canvas Course design, etc.

- Test and refine content, based on end-user feedback.

- Following the launch of course/curriculum, analyze areas of low learner engagement to propose potential course redesign to improve the effectiveness of instruction.

- Keep up to date on learning tools, trends, and ideas to offer innovative solutions to instructional technology principles and practices including design thinking, adult learning principles, blended learning, mobile design, and interactive training.

- Support leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels to share best practices in digital teaching and learning.

- Attend Instructurecon (Canvas LMS National Convention) annually and stay up to date with the new features and functionality within Canvas as they are made available.

Minimum Qualifications

- Experience administering and creating online learning experiences, preferably with an ELA focus, within a robust Learning Management System such as Canvas, Blackboard, and/or Moodle.

- Knowledge of adult and child learning theories and methodologies, focusing on digital learning, and its application in a K-12 learning environment.

- Participate in the entire product lifecycle from design, storyboarding, content development, deployment, and product analysis.

- Exceptional writing and organizational skills, with a flair for collaboration.

- A passion for exploring all forms of media, apps, and interactive software and the vision to apply them to K-12 education.

- A demonstrated record of previous achievement. Portfolio submission required.


- 5+ years in EdTech instructional design, eLearning, or related role. Experience using a robust LMS in curriculum development for a blended or flipped classroom model will also be considered.

- Four-year college degree in related field preferred.

- A track record of creating innovative and thoughtful learning experiences within a LMS that not only improve the users’ experience, but also make it rigorous yet engaging.

- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly grasp project issues and work well under pressure.

- Experience with K-12 digital learning landscape, with an ELA and/or STEM focus
