Prisma - Remote - Full time

Learning Coach (remote, full-time, January 2025 start)

Who we are

Prisma is a new kind of education company driven by a singular mission: to create a next generation capable of solving the world's biggest problems. The world is changing faster than ever, yet our current education system is not designed for rapid change. At Prisma we have designed a new kind of K-12 education company, which is built from the ground up to not only prepare kids in the core competencies they’ll need for the 21st century (things like applied curiosity, innovator’s mindset, communication & collaboration, and initiative & follow through to name a few) but to instill in them a desire to make a large, positive impact on the world. Prisma combines the flexibility of home-based learning, the socialization of a close-knit peer group that meets daily, the support of an inspiring learning coach, and the personalization of an interests-based, adaptable curriculum. We believe that every student deserves to love school, to be able to progress at their own pace, to pursue what interests them, to have a supportive peer group, and to reach their full potential. If you believe this too and you dream of a job where you can truly have an impact on the world, read on!

What the role is

We are turning the typical middle school experience on its head, so this is not your average teacher role! In fact, in our model kids are led by 'Learning coaches,' not teachers and they learn via live video and interactive experiences, not classrooms and textbooks. As a Learning coach, you will be a mentor and trusted adviser to a group of ~20 middle schoolers. You will also be responsible for facilitating engaging live discussions, small group activities and team challenges via live video.

What you'll do

  • Serve as the learning coach, mentor, and advisor to a cohort of ~20 learners in 4th-8th grade
  • Lead 30-minute “standups” Monday-Thursday devoted to team building, developing community, and SEL
  • Lead a 60-minute live workshop on Wednesday and Thursday in which you’ll facilitate fun learning experiences including games, interactive explorations, peer feedback on projects and writing, simulations, and debates
  • Lead a 30-minute enrichment once per week on a topic or skill that you are passionate about
  • Provide detailed and thoughtful feedback on projects and writing to each of your mentor learners multiple times per week
  • Meet with each of your mentor learners in regular 1-on-1s to build relationships, provide feedback, and customize their learning experience
  • Meet regularly with the learning coach and curriculum teams to share best practices, problem solve, action plan, and review learner projects and writing

Who the ideal candidate is

You are:

  • Amazing at forming positive and motivating relationships with kids (experience with 4th-8th graders is a plus)
  • Skilled at creating fun, engaging virtual learning environments that kids want to be a part of each day
  • Engaging and know what it takes to make learning exciting and fun for kids
  • Smart, intellectually curious, quick on your feet
  • Experience working with kids who are neurodivergent and/or have learning differences is a plus
  • Great at providing advice, inspiration and mentorship to kids
  • Adaptable, eager to learn, open to candid feedback and comfortable with change
  • Comfortable with the rapid pace and constant change of a startup
  • Very reliable and hard working
  • Comfortable interacting with parents
  • A creative, open-minded thinker who questions the status quo
  • Passionate about alternative models of education
  • Tech savvy and a strong believer in the power of technology to enhance kids’ learning
  • Comfortable working in a distributed team and desire a job with a high level of personal agency

Beyond possessing these skills, if you also exude these traits, we want to talk with you!

  • Gutsy: Unafraid to speak up, take risks and think differently
  • Humble: Quick to give credit and slow to pass blame
  • Can-do: Optimistic, bring solutions, not problems, and always find a way
  • Team player: Care about, respect, help, and speak candidly with others
  • Driven: Go above and beyond to achieve our mission

How we compensate

  • Competitive salary
  • Health insurance and 401(k) with access to optional benefits such as Dental, Vision, Life insurance, HSA/FSA, etc.
  • Semi-flexible work schedule
  • Generous vacation time
