Learning Analytics Researcher

SRI Education is committed to bringing rigorous research and evaluation data to bear on important decisions concerning K-12 public education. We are seeking to hire a Researcher with a specialty in Learning Analytics and/or Educational Data Mining to join our Learning Analytics practice area. This practice area provides analytics capabilities across domains (e.g., digital learning and technology policy; STEM&CS teaching and learning; early childhood; social-emotional factors; and college and career pathways). The practice area supports multi-disciplinary teams that develop partnerships with educational organizations of all types (e.g., schools, universities, technology developers, and foundations) to help better identify students in need of support, tailor learning experiences, and measure the results of interventions and ongoing improvement efforts. The Learning Analytics Researcher will play a key role working with practitioners to jointly identify needs, build working theories for improvement, analyze complex datasets, and develop data-driven interventions. They will also support measurement efforts in evaluation and learning sciences research. We seek applicants with a strong publication background or trajectory as well as with experience with obtaining funding from the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Education, private foundations, or commercial clients.

The Learning Analytics Researcher will:

  • Collaborate with domain specialists to provide analytics capabilities to a variety of projects
  • Engage with educational organizations to surface needs and develop analysis plans
  • Collaborate with SRI team members to design and produce rapid data products, including visualizations, analysis tables, and interactive data displays
  • Identify scalable strategies for cleaning, merging, analyzing, and reporting on large, diverse, and complex datasets
  • Lead or co-author reports, academic papers, and articles for clients, policymakers, and practitioners
  • Grow professionally and develop new skills through ongoing collegial support and professional development opportunities

Required qualifications:

The candidate should have experience in designing research and/or methodological studies, analyzing and reporting quantitative data, and interpreting research findings for policymakers and practitioners. Knowledge about technology-supported educational innovations and methods for studying and analyzing their data is encouraged. Excellent writing skills and the ability to present research plans and findings are essential, as is the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Substantive knowledge of current issues in K-12 technology education policy at a state and/or federal level is a plus.

The qualified candidate should demonstrate:

  • Experience working with large scale data sets
  • Publication track record or trajectory
  • Expertise in statistical modeling and/or machine learning
  • Scripting skills in R, Python, and/or Stata
  • Experience with creating data visualizations, including web-based (e.g., using R, Python, D3.js, Java)
  • Exposure to version or source control tools (e.g. SVN, GIT)
  • Knowledge in database management for large datasets, including design and querying

Requires a Ph.D. in Statistics, Information or Computer Sciences, Social or Learning Sciences, or related areas, or a Master’s Degree in one of these disciplines with 3-5 years of work experience. Qualified applicants from traditionally underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
