Lead by Learning, Executive Director
ORGANIZATION
Lead by Learning (formerly Mills Teacher Scholars) was originally founded by Anna Richert, former School of Education faculty member at Mills College. The focus of the program was to professionalize teacher learning opportunities to go beyond teacher training and include deep inquiry into student learning. The organization’s Co-Founder and Executive Director, Carrie Wilson started as a student in the program and has subsequently spent the last 12 years establishing the organization’s program model, hiring staff to support the work, building infrastructure and growing the funding base to support a $1 million dollar annual operating budget.
What started as a program to support 20 teaching scholars has now grown into an educator professional learning organization supporting well over 400 teacher scholars, coaches and principals from 18 partner sites across 7 school districts located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, impacting the learning outcomes of over 87,000 students. The future vision of Lead by Learning is to continue this growth beyond its current Bay Area partnership and extend its influence to serve as a model of high-quality educator learning at the state level and beyond.
Lead by Learning staff partner with school districts to customize communities of learning and learning spaces. The program establishes a culture of learning for adults that builds self-awareness essential to advancing both anti-racist work and to continuous improvement in professional growth. Their model, grounded in data, cultivates curiosity and collaboration for adults and their students. Learning spaces are designed to enable the adults in the school to be honest with one another about successes and challenges in the classroom, to figure out for themselves what data they need to look at, where their students currently are and how they want to achieve the end goal for their students. This program enables educators to create a space to lean in on one another, to collaborate and to come to solutions on their own.
