The Lead Accountant develops and interprets detailed budget, planning and cost accounting information and makes recommendations regarding the efficient utilization of resources and the proper accounting for transactions. Performs detailed budget, cost and financial analyses.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; Master’spreferred
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA), preferred.
- Five (5+) years’ experience in cost accounting, auditing and/or financial analysis or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepares quarterly/annual accounting reports and trial balance
- Collaborates with auditors to prepare and provide data.
- Prepares complex journal entries and reviews bank reconciliations.
- Assists with the provision of advisory services to departments with respect to updating budget balances and interpreting cost accounting data.
- Prepares and maintains spreadsheets, reports and other related documents for budget presentations
- Create and prepare financial reports in the accounting system
- Assists in reviews of financial and internal controls to meet management objectives and ensure the safeguarding of assets.
- Keeps abreast of new legislation/developments which affect the budget and assists in interpretation to appropriate district-wide personnel and administrators; reconciles budget system data with other system databases;
- Plans, manages, and implements policies and procedures for a centralized network wide purchasing process.
- Supports grant managers to track the expenses and submit the drawdowns
- Provides technical assistance in the design of budget management, cost accounting or reporting systems and related forms and documents.
- Performs specialized financial or cost analyses (e.g., cash-flow analysis, "what-if” analysis).
- Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Directly supervises employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include decisions related to selection, performance appraisal, discipline and salary recommendations.
- Build strong and empowered teams by providing direction, delegation, counsel, mentoring and expertise to individual team leads, while retaining overall responsibility and accountability for results.
- Promote and encourage the development, training and promotion of staff members to assure the perpetuation of a professional and competent workforce
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Demonstrated knowledge of cost and financial accounting principles, practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of principles and techniques used in conducting management studies, system analyses and financial analyses.
- Knowledge of internal control systems and procedures.
- Skill in performing complex numerical calculations.
- Skill in preparing complex management reports, complex Excel spreadsheets and Word documents.
- Ability to communicate effective both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to solve complex technical problems in areas where no precedent exists.
