LAB Corps Urban Education Fellowship

The LAB Corps is an 11-month urban education fellowship that recruits college graduates from across the country. During this year of service, Fellows work with students in small groups or 1:1 tutorial to provide personalized academic instruction, in math, literacy, and to support habits that foster academic success. We look to develop a diverse cohort of dedicated educators and leaders who invest their time and energy in the academic success of low-income youth. The LAB Corps is a great experience for college graduates interested in careers in education, social justice, policy, or those who plan to pursue graduate degrees in medicine, policy, business, or law.

At the end of their Fellowship year, Fellows may be invited to participate in the LAB Teacher Residency program – through which participants complete their Masters in Education while apprenticing under the mentorship of one of LAB’s Master Teachers.

Responsibilities

  • Fellows provide small group instruction primarily in math or literacy and work to foster the habits and dispositions in students critical to success in college and in professional life. We are looking for candidates with diverse interests and skills.
  • Fellows assist teachers with behavior management, attendance, homework collection, and other tasks in daily homeroom/advisory sessions.
  • Fellows support the LAB staff by taking on operational duties such as proctoring student testing, lunch or recess duty, behavior management during hallway transitions, arrival, and dismissal, and bathroom monitoring.
  • Fellows coordinate with teachers and leadership to monitor student progress and update families.
  • Fellows attend school-wide events, including family nights and evening celebrations, pep rallies, and assemblies, and support faculty and staff with organizing activities, and other duties.
  • Fellows participate in regular meetings and planning sessions related to lesson planning and using academic data to personalize and improve instruction with content and grade level teams.
  • Fellows participate in intensive training in the summer and weekly professional development sessions throughout the school year.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required (all majors welcome, teaching certificate not required)
  • Commitment to LAB’s mission to prepare all students for success in college and careers of their choosing
  • Experience working with low-income students, students with disabilities, and/or English language learners
  • Ability to receive and strategically implement feedback
  • Strong communication skills and strong writing and/or math skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, having the ability to adapt to change easily
  • Prior coaching, mentoring, tutoring, or teaching experience
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Must be willing to comply with a fingerprint-supported criminal background check
  • Proficiency in speaking Spanish, Arabic, or Haitian Creole helpful but not required

Select applicants will be invited to an in-person interview where they will be asked to deliver a brief sample tutorial. After the tutorial, candidates will debrief and receive feedback from staff members. This interview may be in an individual or group setting.

Compensation

LAB Corps Fellows are offered an annual stipend, paid twice per month.
