KIPP Foundation, Senior Director of Equity Programming and Design

Edgility Consulting - New York or Remote - Full time

KIPP Public Schools is a national network of public charter schools that prepares students with the skills and confidence to create the future they want for themselves, their communities, and us all. We are a network of 270 schools, nearly 10,000 educators, and more than 160,000 students and alumni.

Our mission: Together with families and communities, we create joyful, academically excellent schools that prepare students with the skills and confidence to pursue the paths they choose—college, career, and beyond—so they can lead fulfilling lives and build a more just world.

Our vision: Every child grows up free to create the future they want for themselves and their communities.

The KIPP Foundation is a nonprofit organization that supports KIPP schools across the country. The KIPP Foundation trains and develops outstanding educators to lead KIPP public schools; provides tools, resources and training for excellent teaching and learning; promotes innovation; and facilitates the exchange of insights and ideas across KIPP and other public schools and organizations.

At KIPP Foundation, we believe in our understanding of how our identities shape our approach to this work and how we experience power and privilege. We know the work of equity and inclusion in a diverse, multi-site, student-facing organization is fundamental to our success and takes everyone’s commitment. As such, the Senior Director of Equity Programming & Design works directly with regions throughout the KIPP Network to shape their strategy and guide their efforts; they hold up a mirror, and they “hold our hand” while “holding our feet to the fire.” An expert facilitator and a key member of the Equity Team, they will work to help regions eliminate systemic organizational marginalization while promoting inclusion and anti-racist practices that will be evidenced through our structures, policies, and leadership. Regions will not outsource their equity and inclusion efforts to the Senior Director of Equity Programming & Design but will look to them for leadership, alignment, support, and accountability.

The Senior Director of Equity Programming & Design will report to the Chief Equity Officer at the KIPP Foundation.

Leading for Racial Equity Theory of Action

IF Leaders sharpen their equity lens by increasing awareness of their identity, implicit racial bias, and role in promoting white supremacy, and internalize the equitable practices that combat institutional racism to ensure their policies, behaviors and values represent the communities they serve; THEN schools will create the culturally responsive learning environments essential to dismantle interpersonal racism and inspire interactions between staff and student that exemplify culturally relevant care; SO THAT students of color develop the self-concept and skills vital to attaining both critical consciousness and high achievement.

Key Responsibilities of the Senior Director of Equity Programming and Design include:

  • Develop and implement network-wide professional development opportunities that further KIPP’s vision, mission and commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression and equity.
  • Co-develop & support implementation of KIPP Network’s Equity Strategic Plan; oversee the development and implementation of a strategic plan for equity and racial justice rooted in our mission, theory of action, and vision for our network.
  • Serve as a thought-partner to our KIPP Regions and community members in ensuring we are designing at the margins, providing technical and strategic support, and ensuring we are approaching our work with an equity and anti-racist lens.
  • Design and implement a nation-wide professional learning community of Equity Practitioners supporting their leadership and development in service of KIPP’s mission and vision.
  • Develop and support a training cadre that will further equity and racial justice conversations throughout the KIPP Network.
  • Develop organization-wide systems to collect, input, analyze data (both qualitative and quantitative), and monitor/report on progress.
  • Provide leadership, collaboration and support to teammates to differentiate our organizational vision for Racial Justice into role-specific actions and performance management/ accountability systems; and to ensure that our Racial Justice vision is infused into the DNA of the organization through its systems, tools, policies, structures, and practices.
  • Serve as Trusted Advisor and Thought Partner to Colleagues: Support and advocate for teammates who are being impacted by issues of equity and inclusion. Champion a positive culture including feedback and training for those who need to develop their skills and/or awareness of the impact they are having on others. Work closely with schools in supporting the development of anti-racist curriculum, pedagogy and training.
  • Communication & Progress Monitoring: Develop consistent communication and feedback mechanisms to ensure we are able to identify, discuss and address equity issues impacting our students, schools and staff. Stay abreast of research and best practice in equity and inclusion and infuse/adapt to KIPP. Develop communication systems to share best practices, highlight bright spots, and keep staff apprised of key initiatives and activities.
  • Manage relationships with external partners as needed to deliver training and support to achieve our plan.
