Berkeley Lab’s Human Resources Division (https://commons.lbl.gov/display/hr/About+HR) has an opening for a K-12 Program Manager to join their dynamic Workforce Development & Education (WD&E, http://education.lbl.gov/) leadership team! Reporting to the WD&E Manager, the K-12 Program Manager will collaboratively plan, develop, evaluate, revise, and manage the K-12 grade science education and STEM outreach programs.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the planning, evaluation, revision, staffing, and day-to-day implementation of K-12 programs.
  • Market current programs widely across the Lab including, but not limited to:
  • Coordinate the planning efforts of all K-12 programs in collaboration with key stakeholders, with an priority emphasis on Berkeley, Oakland and West Contra Costa County Unified School Districts.
  • Collaborate and meet with key partners both internal and external to the Lab to review existing programs and plan new programs.
  • Develop K-12 program content based on gathering information from Berkeley Lab STEM subject matter experts and translating it to grade appropriate language in documents and materials. This includes translating STEM research and activities into terminology suitable for non-STEM professionals.
  • Perform all planning and budgeting for activities in alignment with Berkeley Lab fiscal year and the K-12 academic year including
  • Developing grade appropriate content and curriculum.
  • Coordinating event logistics such as space, materials, time, volunteers, equipment, registration and site access.
  • Ensuring partner schools are fully prepared prior to events, especially if pre-work is required for the visit.
  • Recruit and coordinate school and community groups participating in WD&E K-12 programs.
  • Recruit and promote participation of staff scientists/non-scientists and resources at the Lab for science education outreach programs, this includes managing Lab tour partners and volunteers.
  • Supervise a small team to help execute and implement successful K-12 programs.
  • Work collaboratively with WD&E, HR partners, and Lab leadership to develop and implement Labwide education vision and outreach initiatives.
  • Conduct regular assessments and/or evaluations of Workforce Development & Education K-12 educational programs. Build key performance indicators and share successes and areas for improvement with the WD&E Manager and HR leadership.
  • Conduct research, write white papers on K-12 STEM education at Berkeley Lab. Research findings and proposals will serve as a basis to grow and develop the program and secure funding through grants and other funding sources.
  • As a team member of WD&E and Human Resources Division, participate in regular meetings and participate in other activities outside of K-12 programmatic work, as needed.
  • Berkeley Lab Exploration of New Discoveries (BLEND) – programs for high school students and faculty to visit Berkeley Lab, tour facilities, take part in STEM activities, meet scientists, and learn about career pathway opportunities.
  • Berkeley Lab in School Setting (BLISS) Resource Center – program where scientific exploration and activity kits are designed at K-12 grade appropriate levels.
  • Daughters & Sons to Work Day – an open scientific exploration day held for children of Berkeley Lab staff.

Require Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, STEM Education, or related field and a minimum of 5 years in K-12 STEM education and program administration or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working with children from diverse backgrounds, including English as a Second Language and different socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Excellent project management and communication management experience and ability to manage multiple projects with different outcomes and timelines.
  • Experience serving as a hands-on STEM educator and tailoring written and verbal communications and presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience in STEM curriculum design and developing grade appropriate K-12 education programs. This includes developing, assessing and evaluating education curriculum, methods/tools and programs with an emphasis for process improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience with conducting education based research and writing research papers.
  • Excellent collaboration skills – ability to partner effectively, share ideas and listen to others, set clear agreement that are mission aligned
  • Strong organizational skills - attention to detail, timelines, budgets, timely responses to customers and education partners.
  • Experience supervising staff and managing team and individual performance.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel and PowerPoint; Google applications.

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in STEM Education or related field.
  • Position will require occasional after hours or weekend work.
  • Experience with volunteer management.
  • Published peer-reviewed author.
  • National Institute for STEM Education certification is desired.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.


  • This is a full time, 1 year, Term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • Salary is commensurate with experience.
