Our Training

Our supportive, hands-on preparation program will ensure you are ready to make a lasting impact in the lives of Tulsa’s kids on your very first day. Designed by leading educators at Tulsa Public Schools to address our students’ and families’ unique needs, Tulsa Teacher Corps prioritizes helping teachers develop the skills and mindsets to create and run challenging, caring, and joyful classrooms.

Hands-on training. During an intensive five-week training program working directly with students in a Tulsa Public Schools summer school classroom, you’ll practice the skills you need to become a successful teacher, including building a strong classroom culture, creating and delivering challenging lessons aligned directly to the Tulsa Public Schools curriculum, and helping students discover connections between their values and experiences and academic content. Every step of the way, you’ll receive the support and guidance of an experienced Tulsa educator.

Personalized coaching. Whether you are learning to play the cello or mastering the jump shot, regular feedback from an experienced coach is key to improving. Teaching is no different. That’s why you’ll have a team of supportive coaches throughout your first year in the classroom to provide ongoing coaching and feedback, helping you hone your craft and deepen your content knowledge.

Certification. Tulsa’s students deserve excellent educators. We hold Corps Members to a high bar of success. Demonstrate that you can help lead students to personal, social, and academic success, and you’ll be guaranteed a teaching job with Tulsa Public Schools. Tulsa Teacher Corps staff members will even support you throughout the hiring process, helping you find the school community that’s right for you.

Note: We are currently seeking approval from the Oklahoma legislature to endorse candidates for Elementary and Special Education licenses. Once we secure approval, we will recommend participants to the State Board of Education to issue a two-year teaching license. From there, participants can apply for a standard teaching certificate.

Why Tulsa Teacher Corps?

Tulsa Public Schools needs great educators with the courage to lead, the passion to inspire, and the knowledge to change lives. You’ll help shape our community’s future and support students to develop their full academic and social potential.

Tulsa Teacher Corps prepares candidates with the skills they need to successfully lead a Tulsa classroom, while removing many of the barriers that prevent aspiring teachers from joining the profession. Corps Members earn their teaching certificate and a salary as they prepare for a meaningful career at Tulsa Public Schools. Corps Members are paid during the program and can access loan forgiveness and AmeriCorps benefits to off-set program costs. For the 2018-19 school year, the starting salary of a first-year teacher at Tulsa Public Schools is $32,900. Our $5,000 tuition covers intensive summer training, coaching, and ongoing professional development and support.

Program Requirements

We’re seeking Corps Members from all backgrounds, including paraprofessionals and substitute teachers who already work in our classrooms, recent college graduates looking to build a career in Tulsa, and career changers from other fields looking to make a lasting impact in our community. Research shows that students with teachers that reflect their racial, cultural, and linguistic diversity do better academically and socially, so we are committed to recruiting diverse Corps Members.
