Instructional Technology Department Manager

American Academy of Family Physicians - Leawood, Kansas - Full time

Travel:  Approximately 10-15 days per year


This position is responsible for providing overall leadership and supervision to the AAFP’s Instructional Technology department team members within the Continuing Medical Education division. Working collaboratively with other managers, particularly the Online Education Operations department manager, this position provides strategic guidance and support for the effective use of instructional technology (i.e. Learning Management System, Audience Engagement System) and online instructional formats (branched cases, reflections) to facilitate performance assessment, educational and clinical outcome measurement, and the delivery of education that aligns with the AAFP’s CME Program-level goals. This position will also develop and curate instructional technologies and designs appropriate for a physician audience and CME educational outcome goals. This position administers the AAFP’s Learning Management System (LMS) and directs the development of Standard Operating Procedures and training for the use of the AAFP’s educational technology assets, ensuring adherence to organizational policies and guidelines (i.e. Compliance, Intellectual Property, Faculty/Vendor Contracts).


Bachelor’s degree or through equivalent work experience, plus at least six years related experience (Master’s degree in Instructional Design/Technology, Curriculum and Instruction, Education, or a related field preferred). The successful candidate will be an experienced manager and leader with a high degree of emotional intelligence and a demonstrated ability to develop and support staff, as well as experience with developing strategy and working with teams to achieve that strategy. Demonstrated experience in the development, management, and operations of technology-facilitated education, particularly interactive video-based activities required. Experience in Continuing Medical Education a plus. Strong change management skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work independently, be self-motivated, highly organized, attentive to detail, and the ability to work on several projects simultaneously required. Ability to understand and apply best practices in learning theory, curriculum design theory, performance/quality improvement education, and educational research methods. Experience with process improvement and project management methodologies (eg, Lean Six Sigma, Agile) strongly preferred. Experience with understanding and ensuring compliance with external regulations or regulations preferred.
