Instructional Designer

The American Council on Education (ACE) is seeking an Instructional Designer to join the Learning & Engagement team.

ACE is a higher education, non-profit organization with almost 1,700 member institutions and educational organizations. ACE’s mission is to provide leadership and a unified voice on key higher education issues through advocacy, research, and program initiatives. ACE’s Engage platform enables and unleashes the passion, knowledge and expertise of senior leaders of colleges and universities through networked social learning. Integrating facilitated dialog about professional practice with multimedia content from multiple higher education organizations and access to the field’s leadings experts, ENGAGE provides multiple entry points and learning paths. Leaders use ENGAGE to advance in their careers and rise to the challenges of equity-minded leadership, institutional transformation, and student success.

The Instructional Designer is integral to realizing this vision. As a core member of the content and experience team, the Instructional Designer is responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and managing production of digital learning content and experiences through Engage. They also work closely with collaborators—subject matter experts (within and beyond ACE), multimedia producers, partner organizations, and Engage community leaders and influencers—to harness their expertise and curate pre-existing content to create powerful learning opportunities. They will optimize a rapid and efficient development process aligned with organizational strategy in parallel with experimenting with innovative learning designs and ensuring that our work is informed by robust evidence about how higher education leaders learn.

Job Responsibilities

  • Investigate and analyze senior higher education leaders’ professional learning needs, preferences, and choices, developing an understanding of the diversity of learners and identifying key opportunities to support their growth.
  • Work with subject matter experts (including Engage users through virtual communities of practice) to make their knowledge of practice explicit and to translate research into accessible, actionable, and compelling formats.
  • Create and manage digital professional learning content for higher education executives, including microcourses, video case studies, toolkits, podcasts, and simulations.
  • Design and coach delivery of online learning experiences, such as workshops, studios, and webinars.
  • Design and revamp both new and established learning models and contribute to the development of a comprehensive andragogy for ACE.
  • Generate evidence of learners’ experiences to inform content design and improvement of the Engage platform.
  • Investigate and promote promising learning tools, trends, and ideas from education, training, and informal learning.
  • Lead multiple projects simultaneously, defining project schedules and managing budgets, consultants, vendors, and relationships.

Education/Experience/Specialized/Knowledge and Competences


  • Proven working experience in instructional design and with instructional technology (5+ years or Masters).
  • BA/BS or MA/MS degree in instructional design, educational technology or equivalent work experience.


  • In-depth knowledge of learning theories and instructional design models, including social learning and connected learning.
  • Fluency with instructional design software (e.g., Articulate RISE, Storyline, Camtasia)
  • Proven excellence in course development, lesson and curriculum planning, and effective sequencing of learning content and strategies
  • Working graphic and information design skills and strong aesthetic sensibility
  • Proven ability to write clear, engaging, and concise copy, instructional text, and media scripts
  • Strong and/or established interest in higher education
  • The ability to take initiative, work independently, learn independently, and effectively manage time
  • Strong experience working in teams and with multiple stakeholders and managing both internal and external relationships
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work across multiple projects at the same time
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of microcredentials and learning paths
  • Facility with content management and learning management systems
  • Experience facilitating professional learning within virtual communities of practice
  • Experience with online leadership development and executive education, especially within higher education and/or professional associations
  • Ability to conduct customer discovery and evaluation research
