The Corwin Instructional Designer & Content Manager is responsible for producing and developing exceptional quality online courses that help educators strengthen classroom practice and grow as professionals. This role is responsible for developing online courses from start to finish based on best-in-class, industry-leading book content from top educators in the field. This includes guiding overall instructional design and content development, active project management, and seeing a course through from inception to launch. This position requires a thorough understanding and creative approach to instructional design for adult learners, experience writing course and/or professional learning content, excellent project management skills, and the ability to produce high quality eLearning courses for K-12 educators. Experience working in K-12 professional learning is essential, with knowledge and awareness of current trends in K-12 education and professional development with the ultimate goal of helping educators to make the greatest possible impact on the students they serve.


Instructional Design, Course Development and Project Management

  • Locates, recruits, contracts, and collaborates with internal and external subject matter experts (SMEs) to produce online courses
  • Follows instructional design methodologies and uses best practices for adult learners in the development of all projects
  • Effectively uses digital media, eLearning development tools and other emerging technologies to plan, create, and deliver engaging online learning experiences with special emphasis on the use of video, interactive eLearning modules, and more
  • Owns project plans and cross-functional work, involving Editorial, Web, Marketing, Video Production, authors/consultants, outside vendors, and other SAGE stakeholders to ensure successful delivery
  • Leads the instructional design components of the overall project plan, including milestones, deliverables, team allocation, and budget spending.
  • Develops learning objectives, maps content, defines course activity types with emphasis on applicability in the K12 classroom, and creates assessment items
  • Develops digital course content, in collaboration with the subject-matter expert, including learning activities and assessments, according to current, research-based ideas in online learning
  • Writes and edits user-facing assessments, job-embedded activities and reflections, case studies, and other narrative
  • Creates sequences of course pages that accomplish learning objectives and project goals, and builds-out page content using LMS platform authoring tools.
  • Contributes to the planning and production of video aligned to course production schedule
  • Manages deadlines and expense budget connected to video, course, and project plans
  • Works with video producers and Corwin editors in pre- and post-production processes including video planning, creating shot lists, reviewing rough cuts, and ensuring final video meets the needs of learners

Strategy, Market Research and User Experience

  • Researches the K12 professional learning, teacher certification and relicensure, and Masters education markets, identifies trends, discovers new market opportunities
  • Researches and evaluates new technology partners and solutions
  • Leads evaluation and redesign of existing products as needed
  • Makes recommendations for new courses
  • Serves as a subject matter expert on instructional design, evolving formats as needed, advising colleagues and customers on learning design and product development for course areas
  • Reviews and evaluates a design's effectiveness at improving learning outcomes prior to or following its release; this may range from informal review to rigorous evaluation through learner testing.
  • Engages with course facilitators and course consumers to evolve courses based on user experiences


  • Bachelor's degree in learning and development, education technology, instructional/curriculum design, education, learning design or a related field required
  • Work in the K-12 professional development space, or experience as a classroom teacher or school administrator, required
  • 3-5 years of work experience in a content development capacity, ideally focused on online content (e.g., courses, webinars, etc.). Sample work products are required
  • Experience developing professional development for educators or other adult learners, required
  • Proven ability with planning, designing, developing, implementing, monitoring and maintaining eLearning projects to facilitate learning, required
  • Experience building online courses in learning management systems, highly recommended. Canvas experience a bonus!
  • Experience writing assessment questions tagged to Bloom’s Taxonomy or DOK as well as developing authentic assessments
  • Demonstrated ability to write effective and engaging instructional materials such as activities, assessments, and engagement exercises on deadline
  • Demonstrated experience in multimedia production project management and workflow
  • Evidence of effective writing and verbal communication skills, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven production environment
  • Broad knowledge of, and experience with, computer programs such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as professional learning, web, and social networking tools


This position can be based in our Thousand Oaks, CA headquarters or based in a remote home office (location depends on experience).
