In 2020, the Education team will launch itself as an independent investment firm that is part of The Omidyar Group. While our mission and investment strategy will not change from our mandate under the Omidyar Network, as a new organization, we are excited to build a global and diverse team committed to exploring innovations in learning and help drive impactful and positive change within the education sector. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a collaborative founding team that will together shape our new organization’s culture and values.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Managing Partner and serving as an integral, founding member of the senior management team, the Global Head of People and Culture will bring our values to life through an employee experience that develops and retains the best talent for our firm and a culture that aspires to be the change we want to see in the world. You will own our talent, human resources, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, driving positive outcomes that will enable each team member to bring their best self to work in the service of our mission. You will set people, culture, and DEI goals in consultation with the CEO and our Board of Directors, identifying internal systems that need improvement to reach those goals. You will oversee our people and culture efforts across multiple offices including Redwood City, CA; Washington DC; London, UK; Sao Paulo, Brazil; and Nairobi, Kenya.

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to apply your skills and talents to our portfolio of mission-driven entrepreneurs and organizations who are unleashing potential around the globe. Working with our investment team, you will advise and coach our entrepreneurs and their teams on critical people and culture issues: from executive coaching to organizational design to performance management and more.

Key Responsibilities:

Internal - for our team:

  • People / HR Programs and Employee Value Proposition: Aligning all People/HR programs and initiatives in support of our strategy and mission and DEI goals
  • Employee experience: Developing and maintaining a world-class People experience through the full employee life cycle, including recruiting, onboarding, performance management, 360s, employee relations, career development, manager training, and offboarding
  • Learning and Growth: Establishing and updating systems and policies in support of the world class people development, including career progression and promotion, job family descriptions, manager training, professional development, etc.
  • Culture: Leading company culture efforts, developing and implementing new approaches to building and strengthening organizational culture, including, potentially, internal communications
  • Comp & Benefits: Managing global compensation, as well as benefits, retention, and reward strategies
  • Compliance: Managing HR compliance as well as supporting handbooks, policies, and procedures
  • Systems: Owning and managing all HR-related systems, vendors and tools, including HRIS, Applicant Tracking System, Performance Management Tools, Payroll, and PEO relationship
  • Travel and Security: Supervising organizational travel safety and security and providing immigration support as needed

External - for our portfolio: Across all functions, our vision is that all of our leaders also be in-service to our investees. Thus, while you will spend 50%+ of your time focused on internal People/Culture efforts, you will also act as an advisor to our portfolio of investees.

  • Advising: This could include (but is not limited to) the following: Strategic Talent Acquisition, Compensation/Rewards & Recognition, Change Management, Organizational Design & Development, Remote Teams, Managing Conflict, Team Development, Manager Training, Learning & Development, People Operations and Compliance, Performance Management, Coaching Managers and Leaders, etc.
  • Build a Network: Build a global network of consultants who can supplement your work with our portfolio across various strategic people needs and engage with them / management them as needed.

What you'll bring to the team:

  • 8+ years of experience in HR operations or a similar function
  • Proven ability to design and implement a diversity, equity, and inclusion-focused recruitment strategy and to recruit top-quality candidates to build diverse teams
  • Strong “people person," with extraordinary ability to listen, understand, and connect with employees at all levels of the organization, across geographies
  • Have a foundation of self-awareness that provides space for continuous learning and growth
  • Strong communications skills, including verbal, written, and presentation
  • Collaborative with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent at project management, particularly with respect to organization, prioritization, and time management and ability to manage and participate in multiple projects at once
  • Knowledge of HRIS systems and basic HR measurement
  • Knowledge of key compliance issues and procedures
  • Experience of working in a global organization preferred
  • Passion for social impact
  • High sense of personal responsibility and integrity
  • Highly adaptable, able to work in change management and changing environments. Able to guide staff navigating organizational change
  • BA/BS degree
  • SHRM certification a plus
