Georgia Cyber Academy (GCA), founded in 2007, is a statewide, tuition-free, online, accredited public charter school serving over 11,000 students from kindergarten through the 12th grade located in 159 Georgia counties. GCA’s mission is to provide an interactive virtual learning environment designed to support individualized and differentiated student-centered educational experiences. Virtual learning offers a more flexible option for students to complete their education. Families may want more control over their student’s educational environment and an ability to provide more enriching opportunities outside of the traditional school classroom.

Students are empowered to reach their full academic potential through participation in live interactive classes and an engaging curriculum that supports individualized and differentiated student learning paths. Parents and students are partnered with certified teachers who instruct and guide student progress and achievement. Students attend school online using engaging curriculums, live interactive classes, and robust tools for students, teachers and parents. GCA currently operates a schoolwide Title One Educational Program.

OPPORTUNITY

Georgia Cyber Academy is hiring a Superintendent to oversee the organization starting in the 2023-2024 academic year. This is an exciting and unique opportunity to lead a dynamic, virtual organization, supporting the design and iteration of forward thinking on-line learning models. This individual, reporting directly to the Board of Directors, will manage GCA’s Senior Leadership Team. They are also responsible for the success of the schools across all domains, including: educational equity, overall instructional practice and academic performance, student supports, culture and climate for all stakeholders, staff engagement, including talent management, development and career supports, partnerships with families and communities.

This person will be an expert at managing a school organization with a clear and transformative vision for innovative online instructional practices and can realize that vision at scale. They can effectively manage through others to get work done, including supporting and leading change efforts when needed. This individual will also be able to clearly articulate their expectations and vision for academic excellence to all stakeholders, including members of the senior leadership team, staff, students, and families. The ideal candidate will be comfortable making tough decisions in service of what is best for students.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities of the Superintendent include:

  • Mission and Vision Alignment: Work in collaboration with the GCA Board of Directors to lead the vision for GCA’s long-term plan of success. The Superintendent will establish and communicate this vision to ensure that academic programs, operations, finance, school culture, community engagement, and external partnerships are highly effective and tightly aligned to GCA’s mission and goals. Monitor progress toward annual and longer term strategic plan goals, and use data from monitoring to drive continuous improvement decisions.
  • Program Leadership: Lead GCA staff in ensuring that all students meet or exceed growth and performance expectations. Communicate and hold leadership and teachers accountable for observable, high impact leadership and instructional practices that support all learners and contribute to student achievement.
  • People Leadership: Manage senior leaders, acting not only as a supervisor but also as a coach and consensus builder, remaining deeply committed to maintaining the organization’s collaborative and anti-racist culture, and developing and bringing out the strengths of all of GCA’s people while holding them accountable for the goals of the organization. Nurture a positive staff culture and climate, and promote the mental health and well being of GCA students and staff.
  • Organizational Leadership: Oversee school operations, development and finance ensuring financial sustainability, high levels of legal compliance (i.e. charter renewal and reports to the state and the Charter Commission) and effective, equitable organizational systems and processes that will secure GCA’s future while partnering closely with organizational leadership to guide the vision and strategy for the school. Supervise the implementation and use of daily operational practices to ensure the safety of staff and students and functioning of the school.
  • Community and Stakeholder Relations: Ensure effective and frequent communication across multiple stakeholder groups (Board of Directors, staff, State Charter School Commission, GaDOE, students, families, etc.), including collaborating with the Board of Directors and CFO to secure and allocate the resources and support necessary to maintain the health of GCA, ensuring the school can realize the highest levels of success for all students and the community. Create and maintain partnerships with institutions, organizations and individuals to support GCA needs (student exposure/trips; potential candidate sources).

PRIORITIES

A successful first year in this role for the new Superintendent will include:

  • Leading schools that are safe, agile and provide supportive virtual learning spaces for students and educators, including leveraging what we have learned from the past couple of years to strategically improve GCA’s academic and social emotional support model and service delivery to students.
  • Developing a clear understanding of - and evolving GCA’s model by leaning on internal experience as well as integrating other best-in-class models to create a transformative vision, communicate it to all stakeholders, build a 5-year strategic plan in partnership with the board and senior leadership team - marshal the resources to successfully implement it.
  • Increasing student enrollment, retention, and development by collaborating with the Leadership Team to set and monitor progress toward annual enrollment, retention and development goals. Ensures the implementation and continuous improvement of strategies, supporting policies, and practices to improve student enrollment.

QUALIFICATIONS

In order to fulfill their responsibilities, the ideal Superintendent candidate will be/have:

  • An accomplished leader with a minimum of 10 years of senior management experience in K-12 public school organizations;
  • Demonstrated commitment to Georgia Cyber Academy’s vision and mission;
  • A track record of implementation of high quality on-line instructional service delivery at scale, with a vision for academic excellence and understanding of how to execute that vision;
  • Demonstrated success in leading on-line school design (strongly preferred);
  • Someone with financial acumen and budget acumen;
  • Culturally competent and a self-reflective leader who understands the effects of race, class, ethnicity, income, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, and other issues of difference in society and is able to lead direct conversations about them;
  • A builder of authentic relationships with senior leaders, staff, families, students and other key stakeholders; able to engage with a variety of individuals while speaking in a clear and compelling manner about the organization’s goals and priorities;
  • Comfort navigating uncertainty and effectively managing complex challenges as they occur; balances urgency with the ability to bring others along towards solutions;
  • Experience serving on an executive leadership team and/or in a similar capacity reporting to a board of directors.
