2019-2020 Job Opening: Head Debate Coach

St. Luke’s School, a secular, college-preparatory day school serving grades 5 through 12 in New Canaan, Connecticut, seeks a talented Head Debate Coach to work directly with our Upper School program and support the Middle School program. The ideal candidate will also teach 2 academic classes. The St. Luke’s Debate program includes about 25 Upper School students and 20 Middle School students. The School competes in two leagues. The Debating Association of New England Independent Schools (DANEIS) offers Parliamentary (including Osterweis), Lincoln-Douglas, Cross-X, and Forensic Speech. The Connecticut Debate Association (CDA) offers Extemporaneous debate.

In recent years, the St. Luke’s Debate team has qualified three students for the WIDPSC World Championships and has won the CDA High School State Championship. The program features older debaters mentoring and coaching the younger ones, a model that promotes the leadership skills we believe are fundamental to debate.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Run all Upper School debate practice sessions, Monday-Thursday, 3:00pm-4:30pm
  • Develop curriculum for both novice and experienced debaters
  • Coach and judge debaters at all Upper School and Middle School tournaments, typically 1-2 weekends/month from September through April
  • Coordinate and communicate about registration at tournaments, travel logistics, and parent and faculty judges
  • Manage the Debate Team budget for tournament entry and travel
  • Hold a Class A endorsement on driver’s license and be the primary driver in SLS vehicles going to and from tournaments
  • Work closely with the Middle School debate coach as well as assistant coaches with limited background in debate
  • Provide photos and write-ups about the debate tournaments for the SLS Communications Department
  • Continue to grow the Debate program and develop a vision for the future
  • Teach 2 academic classes in an area of the candidate’s expertise (e.g. history, literature, math, science)

Key Skills and Qualities:

  • Strong knowledge of Parliamentary debate style (familiarity with other formats a plus)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Flexible approach, able to adapt based on needs of students
  • Collaborative spirit and a desire to mentor student leaders
  • Cultural competency and a commitment to equity and inclusion
  • Effective organization skills
  • Experience teaching academic content in a middle school, high school, or college setting
