FULL STACK PROGRAMMER - ANALYST

Davidson College - Davidson, NC - Full time

Davidson College is looking for a full stack developer to design and build new applications, as part of a nimble innovation team that includes student developers. The future of higher education requires a strategy for digital transformation that includes experimentation and discovery. If you let your code do the talking, have a passion for purposeful R&D work, and love mentoring developers, come join our small team and make a big difference.

Who You Are

You enjoy finding new ways to tackle old challenges. You are not bound to a single language, platform, or framework. You embrace ambiguity and thrive in collaboration. You like to tinker, build, and sometimes break things to make them better. You enjoy mentoring students and junior developers. You are a systems thinker, but appreciate technology for the ways it advances humanity.

What You Will Do

  • Serve as a key member of the Digital Innovation team, working creatively to enhance and expand our current products and create new digital services.
  • Design, develop, and implement application platforms necessary to support a technically-diverse portfolio of prototypes, new applications, and pilot projects.
  • Understand and seek out new approaches to institutional challenges.
  • Apply lean startup, agile and/or scrum methodologies to support multiple development sprints and fast-moving projects.
  • Uphold the department's mission to "drive digital transformation that advances Davidson's primary purpose" and contribute positively to a culture of collaboration, transparency, empathy, innovation, and accountability.

Requirements

  • 2+ years working in a full stack development environment. Portfolio required.
  • Understanding of at least one language (i.e. Python, PHP, Ruby, etc.) and one framework (Django, CakePHP, Rails, etc.).
  • Proficiency in version control (Git or SVN), HTML, CSS, Javascript, and WordPress.
  • Proficiency in a common database like Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, MongoDB, etc.
  • Working knowledge of the Agile framework, Scrum, and/or Lean Startup methodology.
  • Familiarity with Unix and/or Linux operating systems
  • Understanding of data security and best practices for balancing availability with security.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with end users to assess needs, define and document technical requirements/specifications, and propose technical solutions that add value to the business process, department, or organization.
  • A 'can-do' attitude to challenges; energized by change and thriving in team-based work.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and customer service skills and ability to establish good working relationships with a wide range of people within an academic community.
  • Project and time management skills, with ability to effectively manage competing priorities.

Bonus Points For...

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in computer engineering or computer science.
  • Previous experience in higher education and familiarity with its common academic and business processes.
  • Demonstrated interest in and ability to learn new languages and frameworks.
  • Intermediate or advanced skill in Unix/Linux shell scripting.
  • Experience with mobile development for Android and IOS.
  • Experience deploying cloud based applications to platforms like Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Docker, and/or Heroku.
  • Experience developing RESTful APIs and microservices.
  • Demonstrated willingness to embrace and leverage social media for professional development, partnerships, and the promotion of innovation work.
