Front End Web Developer

Facing History and Ourselves - Brookline, Massachusetts - Full time

Facing History is seeking a Front-End Web Developer to join our growing Digital team. This mid-to-senior level position will help to oversee the overall operation, infrastructure, and development of all of Facing History’s digital properties, including the flagship facinghistory.org site. The Front-End Web Developer will assist in establishing best practices with regard to coding standards, user experience, performance and reliability, iterative development, and user testing.

The Digital team is busy and our work is cross-functional in order to serve critical mission-driven needs. Our team prides itself in deeply understanding our user, our mission and impact, and in not losing sight of either when we build technology solutions. Our main site is Drupal 7 and our technology stack includes: Drupal, Salesforce, Canvas LMS, and Hubspot.

You are passionate about building accessible dynamic interfaces and are driven by understanding and serving the user. You deeply care about our mission and are interested in working in a nonprofit environment. You have strong communication skills that facilitate productive partnerships with product and technical colleagues. In partnership with colleagues you like to envision creative solutions to technical challenges. You enjoy the brainstorming, evaluating feasibility, and execution steps to a project -- and can keep yourself from becoming mired in any one phase. You are team-oriented and take a collaborative approach to working with others. You are primarily focused on Front-End technologies, but are a bit of a generalist and willing to support our team in a flexible way. You are a lifelong learner, seeking to develop this role, our team, and always willing to grow in technologies.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Designing and implementing killer web applications, prototypes, user interfaces, and websites for users.
  • Partner with external consultants and our growing internal dev team on major enhancements and updates to our platforms; manage testing tasks and procedures.
  • Document technical solutions and designs as appropriate using JIRA, Google Docs, Git, etc.
  • Participate in discovery conversations with stakeholders. Wireframe and mock-up solutions for stakeholders (Balsamiq, Invision), present and discuss solutions, receive feedback and iterate.
  • Partner in the design, management, execution, and analysis of user testing.
  • Champion UX practices and standards.

Essential Skills/Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2-4 years of experience in front-end web development (please show us your repo and/or portfolio).
    • Experience with Drupal (7 & 8) theming is preferred, but not required.
    • Proficient in designing and delivering exceptional web experiences via HTML/CSS/Javascript.
    • Experience with JS frameworks such as React/ Angular.
  • Experience with version control (git).
  • Demonstrated creative excellence in solving layout and technical challenges.
  • Proven ability to remain motivated and effective while working independently, and skilled at working on a collaborative team
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) skills with technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Proven ability to manage time, balance a portfolio of large and small, long-term and short-term, projects, and to multitask.
  • Willingness to transfer skills to other team members; Mentorship experience a plus.
