About the Position  We are seeking part-time research assistance, on a consultancy basis, to help with data collection for user and pilot studies. Next Generation of Problem Solvers is an NSF funded project that investigates the integration of Computational Thinking (CT) with math and engineering in preschool. It is a collaboration between Digital Promise Global, SRI Education, and WGBH. Digital Promise Global will work with research assistants on a part-time consultancy basis to conduct studies at preschool classrooms and family homes. The goal of the studies is to better understand how early STEM resources support teaching and learning in preschool classrooms and homes.

The studies will take place in the Fall of 2019 and the Spring of 2020. Activities in Boston will include working with preschool classrooms, and two families from each classroom (4 families total), in public preschool programs.

Research assistants will support multiple aspects of the data collection effort, including 1) conducting observations in classrooms, 2) conducting observations with families at home or community-based locations (e.g., libraries, churches, schools) and 3) observing children while they play with interactive learning apps. Preschools are located in Boston, Roslindale and surrounding areas.


  • Attend a training session in October to prepare for job responsibilities as well as periodic debrief meetings with the field study lead
  • Attend regular meetings (via conference call) with the field study lead and other research assistants
  • Support the field study lead in coordinating, scheduling, and confirming visits with families via text and/or phone
  • Make travel arrangements for visits to preschool centers and homes (there will be compensation for mileage/public transportation fare and time traveling between centers)
  • Conduct observations and interviews
  • Document all data accurately and thoroughly using Digital Promise Global data collection forms
  • Submit all data in a timely fashion using Digital Promise Global data collection processes
  • Coordinate and communicate with Digital Promise Global team members as required


The ideal candidate will be a graduate student in education, psychology, or media studies/ communications (with a focus on children’s media). The ideal candidate will also enjoy and have demonstrated experience working with young children and their families (e.g., as a teacher or assistant teacher in an early childhood center/ early elementary grades, participating in early childhood research studies, conducting assessments with young children.). Working knowledge of Spanish is a plus.

Applicants must:

  • Have, at a minimum, undergraduate coursework in education, psychology, or other field related to children
  • Be willing to complete all security measures required by the study
  • Have availability during mornings to accommodate classroom visits and late-afternoons/evenings to accommodate families’ availability for data collection
  • Be able to transport themselves to centers, family homes, or alternative community locations
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess a passion for education, a team mentality, creativity, and a positive “can-do” “yes-and” spirit

The position will require approximately 12-14 hours per week.

Compensation  Digital Promise Global will offer a competitive hourly wage as well as compensation for mileage/public transportation fare and time traveling to and from data collection sites.
