ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Alpha Public Schools is a network of public charter schools that prepares students in low-income communities with the knowledge, skills and character traits they will need to succeed in college and career. Together we create self-reliant leaders committed to making positive change in the world. Alpha employs an innovative blended learning model, which leverages technology to empower great teachers and inspire active learning. Alpha opened its first campus in 2012 and now operates four schools in San Jose; by 2018 we will serve over 2,000 students in grades K-12. Long-term, Alpha will multiply its impact by expanding to additional low-income communities and sharing best practices with other school systems.

POSITION SUMMARY

Alpha is seeking an experienced leader to serve as their Chief Operating Officer (COO). The COO will be a key member of the senior leadership team, guiding Alpha’s growth strategy and building the operational and financial infrastructure necessary to achieve our ambitious mission. Reporting to the CEO, the COO will oversee Operations, Finance, Facilities, and Technology.

The ideal candidate will have proven leadership, management, strategic thinking, communication, relationship building, and project management skills. Additionally, s/he will be adept at managing competing priorities and a high volume of work. S/he should have a history of managing diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders through both direct supervision and influence. S/he will also exhibit the entrepreneurial spirit required for a startup organization, and deeply believes in a no excuses/high expectations approach to student success.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Growth Strategy and Planning

  • Serve as a thought partner to the CEO and collaborate with the senior leadership team on the annual strategic plan development
  • Lead the operational and financial strategic planning process
  • Develop a system of measurement and evaluation that supports the achievement of Alpha’s operational goals

Operations Leadership

  • Build a coherent and effective operating system for Alpha’s schools, including the systems, policies and procedures necessary to enable smooth and efficient operations at all levels of the organization.
  • Build a culture of customer service and continuous data-driven improvement.
  • Collaborate with the Alpha executive team and school leaders to determine the optimal staffing model and allocation of responsibilities for school and network operations.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal reporting and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate and support student recruitment efforts.
  • Negotiate and manage mission-critical vendor relationships.

Finance

  • Manage the Finance team and oversee the creation and maintenance of sound financial systems, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Lead the organization’s annual budgeting and planning process, in collaboration with the senior leadership team and school leaders.
  • Oversee the development of long-term financial projections, enabling Alpha to achieve its objectives while remaining financially sustainable.
  • Oversee financial reporting and analysis, with timely and accurate reporting to the Board of Directors and other key stakeholders.

Facilities

  • Develop and execute a facilities plan to achieve permanent facility solutions for Alpha schools.
  • Ensure that Alpha facilities are maintained to a high standard, so all Alpha students can enjoy a safe and inspiring learning environment.

Technology

  • Ensure Alpha has the technology infrastructure and support necessary to operate its programs effectively and securely.
  • Collaborate with the senior leadership team and school leaders to support continued innovation and improvement of Alpha’s blended learning model.

Note that in our fast-growing organization, specific functional responsibilities of the role may change depending on staff capacity and organizational need.

DESIRED CANDIDATE PROFILE

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5-10 years of progressively increasing operational management experience in a growing organization.
  • Experience creating and successfully implementing strategic plans.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to develop and optimize business systems and processes.
  • Deep team leadership experience, including supporting and coaching top performers and developing other managers.
  • Strong financial skills, including familiarity with accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA or other graduate degree in a related field.
  • Proven nonprofit management experience (especially growing organizations with multiple sites).
  • Fluency with nonprofit accounting and financial management.
  • Robust knowledge of school operations and the public education sector.
  • Experience with facilities development, financing, and/or management.
