NYC Department of Education - Knowledge Sharing - New York, NY - Full time


The New York City school system is the largest in the country, composed of approximately 1.1 million students and 80,000 teachers in over 1,800 schools. The Knowledge Sharing Team, situated in the Division of Teaching and Learning, serves district educators and students by fostering the dissemination of knowledge, best practices, and local innovation system-wide. Knowledge Sharing oversees multiple online platforms, which facilitate the sharing of high-quality resources and promising practices, and supports educators in communicating and collaborating with one another online.

The primary responsibility of the Product Research Consultant is to design, conduct, analyze and report on user-centered design research and usability testing for WeTeachNYC, a new online resource library and professional learning portal developed by the NYC Department of Education for NYC teachers and school leaders, including identification of user needs and goals, task and workflow modeling, field research and persona development as well as rapid iterative usability testing. The Product Development Consultant will work closely with the Product Development Director, Knowledge Sharing, to support the planning and implementation of monthly release cycles for WeTeachNYC.

The Product Research Consultant will have a broad set of communication, user research, and project management skills to coordinate agile release planning, support educators in their use of WeTeachNYC, and build and analyze system data to identify usage trends. We're looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated problem solvers who are passionate about education and technology!

Qualifications

  • Experience with user design and user research
  • Experience with focus group design, implementation, analysis, and reporting
  • Demonstrated project management and customer service skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Working knowledge of IT systems
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Google Apps, and Access)
  • Previous experience in the education sector preferred

Responsibilities

  • Conduct usability research both online and in the field and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Create design mockups to clearly communicate business requirements and translate research findings to multiple audiences, surfacing trends/issues to inform system enhancements.
  • Organize work with other members of the Knowledge Sharing team and educators throughout the NYC Department of Education, as appropriate, to create tight cycles of research and development to improve the WeTeachNYC platform.
  • Develop training documentation for field staff, end users, and internal Knowledge Sharing staff. 
  • Routine and ad hoc reporting duties; present data displays to succinctly communicate findings.
  • Conduct research on similar online platforms, functionalities and tools.
  • Support release planning to enhance performance of WeTeachNYC, using system analytics and user research to inform agile design process.
  • Coordinate the development of use cases, requirements documentation, and user acceptance testing (UAT).
