Executive Product Manager, AP Classroom

The College Board, the national educational organization, is conducting a search for an Executive Product Manager to oversee our AP Classroom suite of digital products. This position may be remote or based at a College Board office in New York or Reston, VA.

About the Role

The Executive Product Manager oversees AP Classroom, the instruction and assessment platform used by over 3 million AP students and nearly 200,000 AP teachers of 38 different subjects. In two years, AP Classroom has become one of the most highly used platforms in American education. Accessed over 110 million times annually by roughly 75% of AP students and teachers, the platform is one of the largest and deepest repositories of data on how students learn. Continuous development and improvement of AP Classroom are top organizational priorities.

AP Classroom integrates a portfolio of products including an assessment delivery platform, video instruction, a multifaceted progress dashboard and professional learning tools for teachers. All AP students and teachers possess free access to the platform and teachers use the tools to support a range of use cases: homework, supplemental instruction and practice, in-class assessment.

The Executive Product Manager oversees a team of internal Product Owners, analysts, technical experts and three 24/7 external development teams. The Executive Product Manager manages a multimillion-dollar budget to improve resources for teaching and learning and possesses broad latitude to develop evidence-based features and functionality to drive learning outcomes and user satisfaction.

Responsibilities of the Role

Willingness to dive deep into AP courses and exams

While a background in assessment isn’t a mandatory requirement, understanding the unique characteristics of AP courses and exams is essential for success. The Executive Product Manager must quickly develop a deep understanding of course and exam frameworks, assessment tasks, and how those concepts are represented in AP Classroom. An interest in assessment design and a willingness to self-study are essential.

Identifying and defining user feedback and needs

Understanding and portraying data is essential to this role. The Executive Product Manager is responsible for developing a consistent multichannel campaign to understand user needs, feedback, and key use cases. In collaboration with the AP Strategy and Analytics and the Learning Evaluation teams, the Executive Product Manager oversees the collection, analysis, and communication of student and teacher usage data, highlighting progress against KPIs and relying on data to make sound product decisions.

Defining product vision, strategy, and roadmap

The Executive Product Manager is responsible for harmonizing AP Classroom and broader AP strategy, supporting key program goals whenever feasible. While the Executive Product Manager must ultimately define a strategy focused on improving usage and user satisfaction –core evergreen goals – she/he must closely consult impacted programs, balancing unique needs with more holistic improvements. The AP Classroom development roadmap must be clearly articulated to relevant stakeholders, ensuring common understanding and aligned goals. Effective and consistent communication is critical.

Designing for simplicity and familiarity through research

While AP Classroom has been widely adopted, it nevertheless requires a simplified user experience and a more appealing design aesthetic. The Executive Product Manager must be laser-focused on improvements that reduce cognitive load, create a lower psychological barrier to entry and allow for seamless transition into instructional practice. To that end, the Executive Product Manager will develop consistent, repeatable methodologies for benchmarking new and existing products and user testing. The Executive Product Manager will communicate user tests to AP colleagues and ensure that testing drives design decisions. A strong background in interactive and/or visual design is preferred.

Management of internal AP Classroom team

The Executive Product Manager will manage a team of nine talented staff (POs and analysts) and possess the opportunity to fill one open position. The Executive Product Manager will ensure that roles and responsibilities are clearly defined and communicated. A proven background simultaneously managing multiple product owners and motivating teams under deadline is essential.

Management of external AP developers

The Executive Product Manager will manage our closest partnership with FineTune Learning, the Boston-based firm that has led development of AP Classroom. Because FineTune’s three squads of developers are distributed across the globe, experience managing a highly distributed team is strongly preferred.

Representing AP Classroom internally and externally

In addition to management of the platform, AP Classroom requires consistent internal and external advocacy. The Executive Product Manager will be responsible for representing AP Classroom successes, challenges, and strategy to senior leadership, ensuring adequate enterprise investment and support. Additionally, the Executive Product Manager will be responsible for representing AP Classroom with students and educators, ensuring that our communications effectively drive the appropriate understandings and behavior.

Vendor sourcing and management

AP Classroom maintains important relationships with our vendor partners, many of whom are core to the success of the platform. We expect that vendor relationships will grow in number as Classroom accumulates new features and capabilities. The Executive Product Manager is responsible for managing vendor relationships, including attendant collaboration with other College Board divisions (legal, procurement, finance, etc.). The ideal candidate will possess experience sourcing vendors, negotiating and developing contracts, and managing vendors on scope, schedule and budget. The Executive Product Manager will manage a substantial annual budget and should have experience doing so effectively in a previous role.

Qualifications for the role

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required, a graduate degree in computer science or a relevant field is a plus.
  • Deep experience with K-12 digital assessment and the educational landscape, especially platforms commonly used by teachers and students in secondary and higher education is essential.
  • Strong track record of motivating teams to achieve ambitious goals, as well as coaching and developing individuals
  • Demonstrated experience managing remote agile teams at velocity is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with content management (video, assessment items) is preferred.
  • Familiarity with common content and data interchange formats (LTI, XML, JSON, etc.) is a plus.
