ReadWorks is passionately committed to solving America’s reading comprehension crisis and student achievement gap. Supported by technology leaders in Silicon Valley and New York City, as well as prominent national philanthropies, ReadWorks has become one of the leading online ventures in the United States for improving teaching and learning in reading comprehension. It provides K-12 educators and students with the largest library of curated nonfiction and literary articles in the country, cognitive science based essential resources, and tools needed to fundamentally improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement in reading comprehension. 

In the last 8 years, ReadWorks has dramatically expanded its range and impact. Today more than 4.5 million active teachers and students are accessing ReadWorks. It is used within 84% of all U.S. K-8 public schools, and within 89% of the highest poverty U.S. K-8 public schools. ReadWorks currently has a budget of $2.2M and a total staff of 15. 


ReadWorks seeks a strategic, collaborative, and visionary Executive Director who will drive the growth of the organization’s services and product offerings, including content, curriculum, technology, and teacher development programs. In addition, the organization is looking for a leader to build and drive fundraising and marketing efforts to increase brand awareness and subscriber use. The Executive Director will work closely with the board, staff, partners, and subscribers to leverage current programs, while also driving to increase revenue from all sources and developing and implementing plans for future growth. 

The organization seeks an Executive Director who forms strong relationships that can be leveraged for fundraising and marketing, and who communicates with passion about ReadWorks’ mission to the philanthropic and educational communities. The Executive Director will be committed to ReadWorks’ literacy mission and deeply invested in teachers and students. 

Key Responsibilities 

Leadership & Executive Management 

• In partnership with the organization’s leaders, the board of directors and key stakeholders, develop a strategic vision to drive all decision making, align resources and create a long-term sustainable organization. 

• Lead and manage the staff, ensuring they understand and contribute to ReadWorks’ vision and are inspired to contribute to its realization. In addition, communicate in an effective and timely way, so staff understand board and executive decisions, can align their work with organizational priorities, and provide staff with appropriate resources to meet stated goals. 

• Analyze the current organizational structure to make sure human resources are deployed for maximum effectiveness and impact. 

Fundraising and Relationship-Building 

• Build, implement and support a comprehensive fundraising and revenue plan that reflects a realistic and sustainable blend of: earned revenue, grants, sponsorships, and individual giving. This will require cultivating strong and trusting relationships across funding streams as well as a high comfort level in making asks and closing funding deals. 

• Develop and lead a national outreach campaign to strengthen ReadWorks’ presence in existing markets; identify and penetrate new markets; and identify opportunities for new partnerships to increase subscribership, usage and brand awareness. 

• Explore enhanced fee-for-service offerings that do not interfere with ReadWorks’ mission to make key reading comprehension resources available without charge. 

• Develop a strategy to increase ReadWorks’ visibility within the broader education and philanthropic communities. 

Product & Technology Development 

• Oversee product and technology development and enhancement efforts, ensuring the maintenance of existing world-class products and continuously promoting innovation through idea generation, testing, and implementation of new products and product extensions. 

• Organize the Product Development team to ensure efficient structure and optimal staffing and collaboration among technical, curricular, classroom, and user experience experts. 

Board Relations/Board Development 

• Energize a committed board of directors in developing a strategic plan that sets a clear and ambitious direction for ReadWorks. 

• Capitalize on the board’s engagement to more fully utilize their expertise and relationships. 

• Coordinate with the board president to establish objectives for the board and its committees. 

• Define board best practices and encourage board development activities in collaboration with the board chair to clarify board roles and responsibilities and increase overall effectiveness. 


The ideal candidate will be: 

• A highly effective leader and manager, able to take an organization successfully through a period of growth, change, and/or realignment. 

• Action-oriented and entrepreneurial with the ability to inspire a team to act with purpose, creativity, and urgency. 

• A strategic thinker with the ability to frame choices in the context of the strategic plan. 

• An expert problem solver around strategic and operational challenges. 

• Able to identify and capitalize on opportunities for new programmatic initiatives and revenue streams, and to nurture and expand strategic relationships. 

• Charismatic and have a compelling external presence among all stakeholders; the Executive Director will be an effective champion for the ReadWorks’ mission to solve the reading comprehension crisis. 

• Adept in marketing, public relations, and fundraising with the ability to engage a wide-range of stakeholders. 

• Experienced in working effectively with a board of directors. 

• A proven leader with at least 10 years of success in a senior management role; expertise in some relevant sphere of education, school or school leadership, curriculum design, or classroom teaching highly preferred. 

• Bachelor’s degree required. An advanced degree in a relevant field is strongly preferred.
