The Oakland Public Education Fund (the Ed Fund) was founded in 2003 as the Oakland Schools Foundation, with the mission of leading the development and investment of community resources in Oakland public schools so that all students can learn, grow, and thrive. The Ed Fund is the only organization raising money for all Oakland public schools. In the past fifteen years, the org has raised more than $75 million for programs that help students thrive. The Ed Fund’s 13 core employees manage more than $25m annually, including overseeing fiscal sponsorship for almost 100 Oakland-based education projects and serving as the employer of record for 200 individuals. For more information about the Oakland Public Education Fund and its focus on raising money, building partnerships, and rallying the community around public schools, please visit www.oaklandedfund.org.

As it enters its sixteenth year of operation, the Oakland Public Education Fund is seeking a new Executive Director to continue the organization’s strong partnerships with local public education institutions while developing a vision for its future as a hub of funding and programmatic support to Oakland’s K-12 students and public schools. Current leader Brian Stanley has strengthened the organization’s financial position, created deep partnerships with Oakland’s public school leaders, built a diverse range of programs and services to support the city’s youth and their families, and led the organization’s maturity from a fledgling start-up to a vital institution. The next phase of the Ed Fund’s growth will involve the creation of a multi-year strategic plan, continued partnership with and development of the Board of Directors, maintaining the Ed Fund’s relationship with Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) as a key philanthropic partner, and increasing the Ed Fund’s visibility in the broader Oakland community.

The Oakland Public Education Fund board seeks: an entrepreneurial leader who is a seasoned manager; an experienced development professional with a track record of raising substantial funding from philanthropic and earned revenue sources; someone with a familiarity with the context of Oakland’s public education landscape and the diverse challenges and opportunities that presents; a compelling communicator; and a results-driven manager who has demonstrated success for the initiatives and organizations under their leadership. This is an ideal opportunity for an impassioned social justice warrior who wants to make a significant impact on Oakland’s youth and families by bringing in resources and services that meet needs for the community at large.

The Executive Director’s key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the vision and “on the ground” execution of Ed Fund’s vision for success, including ensuring that its programs, organizational culture, local partnerships, and community engagement are highly effective and tightly aligned to the organization’s mission and goals;
  • Managing senior leaders and staff, remaining deeply committed to developing and bringing out the strengths of all of the Ed Fund’s people while holding them accountable for their goals and the organization’s desired financial, programmatic, and compliance outcomes;
  • Partnering with the Board of Directors and funders to secure and allocate the resources and supports necessary to maintain the health of the Ed Fund and the programs it supports, remaining solutions-oriented while pushing the boundaries of what is possible to realize the highest levels of success for Oakland’s youth and our local community;
  • Serving as an important supporter to OUSD leadership as a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet, a thought partner on how to secure and maintain important funding partnerships, and a public champion of district initiatives;
  • Inspiring the leadership team and staff to be their best selves every day, valuing diversity, equity and inclusion for all of Ed Fund’s constituents and ensuring an unyielding focus at all times on what is best for the Ed Fund’s partners, supporters, and the Oakland community.

In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Executive Director candidate will be:

  • An accomplished leader with a track record of success in education, nonprofits and/or the private sector who is dedicated to the Ed Fund mission and has a deep commitment to ensuring that all students can access the opportunities they deserve.
  • Inspiring in his or her management style; one who sees the possibility in all adults and is willing to devote time to coach and develop them while holding them accountable to measurable results.
  • Experienced in raising funds for their organization, including a track record of building successful business and program partnerships and/or major gifts fundraising.
  • Culturally competent and a self-reflective leader who understands the effects of race, class, ethnicity, income, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, and other issues of difference in society and is able to lead direct conversations about them.
  • Skilled in strategic planning, project management, and organization; able to focus on big picture priorities while not losing sight of the details.
  • Dynamic and versatile, someone who engages effectively with a variety of individuals and speaks in a clear, compelling, and authentic manner about the organization’s goals and priorities.
  • Strong partnership builder with a diverse range of community leaders and institutions.
