The Los Feliz Charter School for the Arts (LFCSA) is a stand-alone public charter school founded in 2006 and serving 500 Kindergarten through 5th grade students in the Glassell Park area of Los Angeles. Its mission is to engage children in an inspiring, challenging, and civically active educational experience that embraces learning through the arts. Rooted in a project-based, constructivist, and arts integrated educational philosophy, LFCSA is a is a place where students, staff, parents, and the community collaborate to create a nurturing and inspiring learning environment where students can develop academic and life skills through creativity, inquiry, investigation, and reflection. The school will be expanding beyond the elementary school grades, opening a middle school program in the ‘18-’19 school year, with plans to have two sites serving 700 students by 2020.

LFCSA’s unique school model is rigorously research based and designed to equip students for success in a 21st century world. LFCSA’s project-based, constructivist, and arts integrated educational model creates a rich and vibrant learning environment. In addition, the whole school community is deeply committed to a restorative justice philosophy and social-emotional learning approaches, which are embedded in daily classroom interactions and academic projects. LFCSA has a high rate of retaining its dedicated, talented teachers and has consistently delivered a quality educational experience for its students. The school serves a diverse student body reflecting a variety of languages, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and staff leverage a social emotional learning approach as well. Nearly 41% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, 40% are Latino, 50% are White and 10-15% of students are English language learners; meanwhile the school has a goal of growing the size of its free and reduced lunch and English language learner populations. LFCSA is seeking a seasoned leader, strong external relations and fundraising professional, skilled strategic planner, and passionate advocate of the school’s mission to lead the school into its next phase of growth. S/he will be responsible for: supervising finance and operations; managing the school’s senior academic leadership; overseeing all fundraising and revenue generating operations; leading relationships with the board, funders, district, political leaders and other community members; and ensuring that the school’s vision and mission are living through its work with students every day. S/he will be a passionate advocate for LFCSA’s work on behalf of its students and will build out a thriving and economically sustainable PreK-8th grade program that ensures a high level of arts integration and social emotional learning for all students as well as a focus on academic skill development and cultural competence.

The ideal Executive Director candidate will believe deeply in LFSCA’s constructivist educational model and its focus on arts integration (preference for individuals who have experience in these areas). S/he will be strong in fundraising and external relations with connections in the local education community and among funders, district leaders, policymakers, and the broader public. This person will have led a nonprofit organization or school with a similar model. S/he will understand the needs of a stand alone charter school and issues like facilities, finances, state charter law, and the district authorization process. And any qualified candidate will be able to demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion with meaningful examples of how they have led with these values in their previous work with team members and colleagues.


The Executive Director’s key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the vision for LFCSA’s success, including ensuring that the delivery of its academic curriculum, extra-curricular programs, community engagement, marketing, communications, and external partnerships are highly effective and tightly aligned to the school’s mission and goals;
  • Managing the instructional leaders and other senior staff by acting not only as a supervisor but also as a coach and consensus builder and by remaining deeply committed to developing and bringing out the strengths of all of LFCSA’s people while holding them accountable for their goals and desired student outcomes;
  • Partnering with the Board of Directors and funders to secure and allocate the resources and supports necessary to maintain the health of the school and fulfill its goals for expansion, pushing the boundaries of what is possible to realize the highest levels of success for LFCSA’s students;
  • Ensuring that the organization's core values are lived, embraced, and strengthened by all stakeholders, and that the work of teachers and staff is purposeful and meaningful towards student outcomes.


In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Executive Director will be:

  • An accomplished leader with a minimum of 15 years professional experience and demonstrated success as a school-based administrator, nonprofit executive, and/or senior manager in a setting that ensures outstanding outcomes for the children/youth they serve.
  • Successful in leading staff to high levels of performance; a highly effective manager who is willing to devote time to coach and develop colleagues while holding them accountable to measurable results.
  • Experienced in overseeing a small but growing organization; knowledgeable about best practices around school growth and programmatic expansion, and able to manage organizational change effectively.
  • A self-reflective leader who understands the effects of race, class, ethnicity, income, gender identity, and other issues of difference in our society and has personally worked in similar communities to ensure all students have an opportunity to achieve their personal dreams of college and career success.
  • Knowledgeable about the academic and social-emotional needs of primary and middle grade students with background in constructivist pedagogy and/or arts integration practices.
  • Experienced with ensuring the financial health and sustainability of their organization(s) through developing strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders and raising significant public and private dollars, both in terms of absolute size and percentage of revenue growth over time.
  • Dynamic and versatile in their communication, able to: engage a variety of individuals in dialogue; speak in a clear, compelling, and authentic manner about the organization’s goals and priorities; and provide consistent, clear updates to all stakeholders about current and upcoming events and issues of interest.
