About NSCC

Founded in 1996 at Teachers College, Columbia University, the National School Climate Center (NSCC) today is a prominent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and recognized leader nationally and internationally in promoting positive and sustained school climate, social and emotional learning and civic education. With an operating budget approaching $2M and a team of 23 professionals, NSCC works with schools, school districts, state departments of education, the academic community, mental health professionals and educational partners to support a model for effective school climate improvement and facilitating positive outcomes for students. Established with the vision that all children should develop the essential social, emotional and civic competencies to become healthy and productive citizens, its core mission is to measure and improve the climate for learning and emotional development in schools to help children realize their fullest potential as individuals and as engaged members of society. NSCC achieves this through: advocacy and policy, measurement, research and educational services.

The Opportunity

NSCC is seeking a visionary and dynamic Executive Director with exceptionally strong executive management skills to lead the organization through its next phase of service expansion and growth during a time of significant change and opportunity as the organization’s Co-founder and President transitions from his current leadership role. Reporting to the Board of Trustees and working in partnership with the Leadership Team and former President who will serve as a Senior Advisor to the organization, the new Executive Director will build on the organization’s past successes while advancing the reputation, work, products and programs of NSCC. S/he will significantly expand financial support for NSCC’s mission and help define new and emerging opportunities to pursue. The Executive Director will additionally ensure that the the core operational structure is designed and administered to best support the organization’s staff, its expanded products and services and its collaborative work with government, foundations, professionals, educational partners and schools across the country.

Core Responsibilities

The Executive Director will assume the following key responsibilities:

Lead the refinement of NSCC’s vision and strategic priorities to both diversify and help facilitate expansion goals to increase NSCC’s impact on schools and outcomes for children, market share and long-term sustainability

Nurture and develop local and national partnerships to increase NSCC’s visibility and influence in the field

Promote research to move the fields of school climate and social and emotional learning forward

Cultivate relationships with core stakeholders including government leaders, academia and foundations in order to rally support for the mission and work of NSCC and significantly expand and diversify the organization’s funding and financial resources

As the key ambassador and spokesperson for the organization, build enduring partnerships in new and existing markets and cultivate a diverse network of relationships with funders, professionals in the field and school partners

Attract, develop and retain a high quality staff and leadership team; inspire a strong commitment to cultural competence, diversity and inclusion and a shared vision and commitment to the organization

Advance NSCC’s reputation and provide an entrepreneurial vision to promote its initiatives, products and services delivered to schools, school districts, cities, states and regions, nationally and internationally

Be an exceptional voice for NSCC, publishing news of interest and communicating program results emphasizing the role of SEL and school climate in fostering the future success of children in school

Together with the Board Chair develop and support a committed Board of Trustees, participate on various Committees of the Board and cultivate active Board involvement in helping to shape the strategic direction of the organization and increase its financial resources

Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous evaluation and quality management systems and infrastructure to support and advance the core work of the organization

Oversee the development of key performance indicators and metrics to document the outcomes and impact of NSCC services, products and programs

Candidate Profile & Personal Characteristics

Passion For NSCC Mission & Experience - An unwavering passionabout issues impacting school climate, social and emotional learning and improving overall educational outcomes for young people in school combined with a strong commitment to promoting research, policy and educational work to support NSCC’s mission. This passion should be complemented by a proven record of accomplishment at the senior executive level leading a nonprofit organization, public school/district/system, significant foundation supporting education initiatives, and/or major national education initiative. The Executive Director should also possess content expertise in one or more of the following areas: school climate, education reform, social and emotional learningand educational programming, in addition to an advanced degreein education or a related field.

Strategic & Visionary Leader -A strategic, creative and innovative thinker, with an entrepreneurial vision, who can build on the past successes, reputation and work of NSCC while leveraging new opportunities and transformational priorities for the organization. The ability to significantly inspire the Leadership Team, Staff and Board to embrace and support the work of NSCC and the strategic, operational, educational and financial goals of the organization.

Executive Leadership & Management Expertise - A highly skilled executive leader with superior operational/organizational management expertise coupled with a strong financial acumen and proven track record of financial accountability. Experience building and supporting high performance teams and advancing quality and excellence.

Relationship Builder / Collaborator & Fundraiser -A successful track record as a positive relationship builder and collaborator with institutions, funders and professionals for the purpose of building a broad network of support for NSCC’s programs, products and services. Demonstrated leadership in building an effective fundraising vision and strategy for the organization which both expands and diversifies the organization’s financial resources and leverages new opportunities to expand NSCC’s programs and market presence. Superior ability to communicate to diverse audiences with passion and clarity of voice about the vision and core work of the organization.

Board Relations -Past success working with a Board of Trustees with the ability to inspire and actively engage Trustees in the work of the organization and its goal to increase financial and philanthropic support to help advance NSCC’s mission. Able to deliver a consistent and unifying message to the Board about the organization’s strategic direction, activities and progress in achieving organizational priorities and goals.
