TITLE: Executive Director, Innovation and Digital Learning

WORK YEAR: 221 Days 

SALARY SCHEDULE: 31-1 ($151,864 - $179,402)

The Executive Director of Innovation and Digital Learning supports the MUSD Strategic Goals by implementing evidence-based, innovative school and program models to ensure all students have access to culturally relevant learning environments. The Executive Director is the District’s research and design thinking leader, responsible for identifying and scaling creative ideas that work throughout the district in partnership with stakeholders. The Executive Director has the responsibility of fostering MUSD’s vision, mission, and core values; and inspiring innovation, iteration, and collaboration throughout the District, particularly in the areas of digital literacy, computer science standards, pathways to career, professional learning, project based, and applied learning. The Executive Director provides direction to and builds capacity of the district support team in working creatively and effectively to improve the learning experience and outcomes for student achievement and pathways to a career. 

Innovation is driven by a commitment to excellence and continuous improvement that is reflective and data-based; most of which is driven by curiosity, risk-taking, and experimentation. The focal point of this position is to facilitate brain-based learning theories and design thinking with best practices to support in the design of a model that reflects a learner who is career ready.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 

● Supports the research and development efforts of the Learning Services Department, focused on the trends in business, the economy, state and local laws, and the needs of all learners, both students and MUSD team members. 

● Researches emerging and innovative practices and programs, within and outside the educational arena, that personalize learning for all students and educators that improve student engagement, equity and achievement. 

● Supports team members in leveraging the use of digital resources to meet and exceed student learning goals through effective and innovative instructional practices, tools, and applications. 

● Create distance learning and all facets thereof; laws, programs, set-up, professional development, and scope of instruction. 

● Develops and implements strategies to align curriculum, assessment, accountability, virtual/blended learning, and professional development to support equity-focused 22nd century learning environments. 

● Oversees the coordination of district programs, including all state and federal projects, such as Dual Enrollment, Adult Education, School Improvement, English language development, Dual Immersion, Titles I –V, Gifted and Talented Education, Early Childhood Development, Pathway Programs, Middle College High School, Summer School, Alternative School, Home and Hospital, and Virtual Learning Programs such as MUSD EducatEveryWhere.

● Directs Career Technical Education and entrepreneurial learning that provides rigorous application-based learning opportunities to all students. 

● Plans, coordinates, oversees and monitors all areas of curriculum development for grades preschool-adult, utilizing curriculum committees, certificated and classified team members, district and school leaders, parents/caregivers and students; prepares, coordinates and distributes to schools curriculum guides/instructional materials and provides for their evaluation; guides teacher and administrator training efforts undertaken by the district; works closely with others to improve the effectiveness and integration of the district curriculum. 

● Engages educators, employers, community members, parents, and policymakers in an ongoing dialogue that provides recommendations and advice about education in the 4th Industrial Revolution and beyond. 

● Develops policies to support increased choice, access and equity for students and families to high-quality school options including signature practices such as World Languages, Learning Communities, Project Based Learning, Personalized Learning Platforms, and Discovery Learning. 

● Identifies new strategies and solutions to improve the learning experience and improve student achievement in alignment with MUSD Strategic Goals and the Local Control Accountability Plan. 

● In collaboration with district and school leaders, establishes a comprehensive data strategy that enables team members to have regular access to clear, understandable and transparent information to drive decision-making on strategic actions; and oversees state and district benchmark assessments. 

● Supervises and evaluates Principals and District Office Personnel on mutually defined goals, actions, and metrics; and provides regular feedback, coaching and direct support to ensure all team members are highly effective in their work to support schools. 

● Ensures that team members provide responsive, courteous and helpful customer service to the schools, parents/caregivers, team members, and other stakeholders they serve. 

● Collaborates with district leaders to establish and provide school leaders with systematic professional development. 

● Oversees and further develops professional learning experiences for team members and parents/caregivers through the Colleague 2 Colleague and Parent 2 Parent platforms. 

● Participates in school and district conferences, and makes written reports on evaluations, curriculum, and similar programs to the Superintendent and others. 

● Serves as a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet and makes written and oral presentations to the Board and community.

 Performs related duties as assigned. 

ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS:

California administrative credential and Masters degree 

Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience, and three (3) years of site level leadership – high school preferred 

Demonstrated leadership, organization, and management skills

Strong background in curriculum theory, digital learning, and staff development 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of: 

Demonstrated commitment to teaching and learning with experience in adult learning theory 

Extensive knowledge of the Design Thinking Protocol 

Research and development designs, methods, strategies, processes and techniques 

Ability to problem solve, think critically and manage conflicts

Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively 

Ability to manage multiple budgets 

Ability to collect, analyze and use multiple sources of data 

Work collaboratively to build consensus while also delivering exceptional results
