OPPORTUNITY

Equitas is seeking a senior leader who holds a deep, passionate belief in the organization’s mission and will increase its organizational effectiveness by relentlessly pushing toward results and productivity. Reporting to the CEO, the Chief of Staff (COS) will be a strong and inspirational leader, managing the critical functions of Development, DEI and Anti-racism and Communications, while also serving as a strategic partner to the CEO, the senior staff and the board.

The Chief of Staff will serve as the lead driver of organizational efficiency and equity driven strategy. This leadership position will carry the responsibility of ensuring that the CEO and organization have the systems and structures in place to achieve its core purpose in policy and in practice. The Chief of Staff will achieve excellence through implementing systems, projects and strategies to carry out the priorities and goals of the organization through cross functional execution.

The next Chief of Staff at Equitas will be a relentless force for equity through process, policy and practice. This leader will navigate people, vision and details simultaneously to get results. This leader will galvanize people to align in the work for the purpose of equity and access for all students.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities of the Chief of Staff include:

  • CEO Support:
    • Maximize the CEO’s effectiveness by leveraging her time in a way that ensures maximum focus on highest priority organization issues and initiatives;
    • Work with the CEO’s direct reports to ensure timely communication, collaboration and results orientation;
    • Ensure that the Equitas Academy board is informed, prepared and positioned to serve its function for the good of the organization.
  • Leadership, Planning and Strategy:
    • Serve as a member of the organization’s executive leadership team;
    • Lead several direct reports including the Development Director, Director of Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Anti-racism, and Communications Director;
    • Lead the board of directors, ensure the committees goals are successful and lead board development and systems;
    • Support the CEO in coordinating and leading team meetings;
    • Develop a plan for how the executive team spends time, makes decisions and aligns on the work ahead through strategic initiatives.
  • Cross Functional Project Management
    • Serve as the primary project manager and lead for key strategic projects that tie across different functions of the organization;
    • Determine appropriate project timelines, communication and training structures that make change more likely and successful;
    • Work to ensure successful launch of new initiatives as directed by the CEO.
  • Diversity Equity and Inclusion
    • Lead the equity strategy for the organization;
    • Actively source opportunities to find equity driven change;
    • Hold the organization and others accountable to equity driven strategy.

PRIORITIES

A successful first year in this role for the new Chief of Staff will include:

  • Serving as a critical thought partner and collaborator to the CEO, Board and Executive Leadership Team.
  • Keeping a pulse on the broader organizational health on behalf of the CEO, including culture, systems/processes, crisis management.
  • Ensuring anti-racist processes and systems are established and an equity driven strategy is behind all decisions.
  • Managing staff and providing leadership for the vision, goals and strategy for each function.
  • Establishing clear expectations and promoting rigorous use of data to drive decision-making and fostering a culture of accountability.
  • Setting vision and direction, in alignment with the Executive Leadership Team, for how internal communication drives organizational culture.
  • Developing and managing internal communications strategy in partnership with key stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS

In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Chief of Staff candidate will be:

  • An accomplished leader with 10+ years of professional success (preferably in the nonprofit sector) including 5+ years serving on a senior leadership team or C-Suite, 5+ years management experience, and 3+ years experience overseeing one or more of the areas under the Chief of Staff purview: Development, DEI, Marketing & Communications, and Board Relations.
  • Highly skilled in equity facing work (3 - 5 years of programmatic experience related to diversity, equity and inclusion), demonstrating a strong equity stance and conviction of system and policy as an anti-racist lever.
  • Equipped with a Bachelor's degree (may hold a master’s degree in business, strategy or another relevant degree).
  • Committed to Equitas’s mission of providing a structured, achievement-based community that prepares students to graduate from four-year colleges and universities.
  • Experienced in working with board members, chairs, and committees and supporting a CEO or equivalent leader in time management and goal setting.
  • A strong communicator and collaborator who is able to lead and manage a highly effective team, as well as their peers.
  • Experienced with short and long term strategic planning and able to manage multiple projects, prioritize effectively, and solve problems strategically while weighing the advantages and disadvantages of each approach with a network-wide lens.
  • Flexible and adaptable, transitioning quickly from individual, detail oriented projects to collaborative, people-oriented conversations.
  • Relentless in pushing towards results and productivity on behalf of the organization.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This position offers a competitive salary starting at $178,000 and robust benefits including medical, dental and retirement. More details can be provided upon request.
