Innovate Public Schools (Innovate) is a nonprofit organization focused on ensuring that all Bay Area students, including low-income students and students of color, receive an excellent education. By providing cutting-edge leadership development programs to reform-minded charter schools, charter management organizations, and school districts, Innovate is striving to ensure that every student across the Bay Area has access to a world-class school.

Innovate identifies and incubates Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, who are experienced school leaders in the process of designing and launching new networks of innovative, high-performing charter schools in the Bay Area. The Start-Up Schools Fellowship, is a year-long leadership development program aimed at supporting school leaders who plan to launch new, high quality schools, with a particular emphasis on students of color and low-income students. Innovate also supports the design and implementation of high quality leadership development systems across charter networks, the redesign and transformation of struggling schools, and conducts intensive school audits focused on improving management, instruction, and school culture. 

Entrepreneur-in-Residence Opportunity

Innovate is conducting a competitive national search for creative educators and committed entrepreneurs to launch innovative new school networks serving low-income students of color in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Entrepreneurs-in-Residence who are chosen for this highly selective opportunity will receive a two-year, fully funded residency to conceptualize, develop and execute on the school model of their dreams. Entrepreneurs will also receive extensive school design support and leadership development, weekly one-on-one coaching, and the opportunity to visit and collaborate with some of the best schools in the region and country. 

Entrepreneurs-in-Residence will possess proven track records as school leaders in achieving significant academic gains with high needs populations like low-income students, English language learners and students of color. Additionally they will have the mindsets and technical skills needed to design highly effective school models and to expand their academic programs to serve significant numbers of students over time. Specifically, they will have deep knowledge of the best practices that successful schools are offering across the country and will have the drive to innovate on these practices in their new school design, with a particular focus on leveraging blended learning and other innovative techniques to personalize instruction.


Innovate’s new Entrepreneurs-in-Residence must demonstrate a commitment to the following best practices and principles of successful, equitable, innovative schools:

  • Academic rigor. Schools across the country are making the transition to the Common Core. In the best schools, this is far more than lip service. The rigor of texts and questioning are consistently high, students are learning mathematical concepts and application (vs. just rote learning), and students are taking on responsibility for much more of the learning (vs. being very teacher-centric).
  • Individualized learning. Our partnership schools will be models of using innovative instructional models that tap the groundswell of educational technology and software to dramatically improve how we individualize instruction to meet each students’ needs. The best schools are able to innovate on different ways to teach or use time and resources, and then apply them systematically in their schools if they yield benefits for students.
  • Parent leadership and political engagement. In order to create many more great schools for thousands of children, education reform leaders, including charter school leaders, must be engaged in the local political arena. Innovate will bring its vast experience in parent organizing and grassroots politics to help our Entrepreneurs build network of schools that are wired to maximize parent leadership and community engagement. Entrepreneurs will work closely with Innovate’s parent organizing team to ensure this happens.
  • Operational excellence. The best schools “sweat the details” about instructional and operational issues, and create school-wide systems to ensure consistency in execution. These schools will be designed for replication, with clear written plans about all key programmatic, finance, and operational issues.
