English Literature Specialist (Middle & Upper School) RESPONSIBILITIES

The English Literature Specialist is responsible for small group English Literature instruction, in-school tutoring, and providing assistance in project design.

  • Help shape Khan Lab School’s Middle & Upper School English Literature program using best practices based on experience and research
  • Small Group Instruction & Tutoring: Provide individualized and small group instruction in reading, writing, and grammar. Adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student:
    • Curate individual learning activities for personalized learning goals (i.e. tutoring, feedback, reflection, goal setting)
    • Collect and use data to analyze student progress and group students dynamically to meet their needs; adjust instruction accordingly
    • Create interim assessments to evaluate student progress and share data with lead teachers (Advisors), the Head of Middle & Upper School, students, and parents
  • Create and/or implement an interdisciplinary and academically rigorous curriculum for a mixed-age group
  • Communicate learning targets and outcomes to colleagues, parents, and students on a regular basis
  • Commit to building a community of student-centered educators by mentoring other educators and making regular contributions to be shared publicly, including curriculum, best practices, research findings, etc.
  • Collaborate with researchers, designers, technologists, and other educators to design and refine an innovative model for school education
  • Project-Based Learning:
    • Provide input into the design of experiential, project-based learning activities by using global resources to create an experience that’s relevant and real-world


  • Have at least 5+ years experience teaching English Literature at the secondary level
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree in education, or equivalent
  • Prior experience with project-based learning activities
  • Prior experience with demonstrated academic results
  • Prior experience with or interest in collaborative and constructivist instruction, in which the teacher acts as a coach/mentor who supports student agency and independence
  • Passion for working with and engaging students in student-driven learning experiences
  • Belief in fostering children’s social-emotional capabilities
  • Commitment to continuous improvement
  • Entrepreneurial mindset
  • Flexibility. A LOT of flexibility. We are in startup mode, so every aspect of the Lab School is subject to change.
  • Equal parts self-starter and team player
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills


  • Experience teaching humanities and/or team-teaching with humanities teachers
  • A portfolio of project based learning and applied learning lessons across multiple domains in the language arts
  • Experience in a multicultural school environment
  • Multilingual and international experience
  • Experience working with middle and high school students
  • Prior experience leading curriculum development
