eLearning Course Designer

Harvard Catalyst | The Harvard Clinical and Translational Science Center, facilitates clinical and translational research at 27 Harvard schools and Academic Healthcare Centers by educating and training investigators, providing tools and technologies that enable their research, and bringing diverse communities of investigators together to accelerate the pace of human investigation.

Reporting to the Senior Program Manager of Online Learning, the eLearning Course Designer (eCD) will support the development and growth of online learning at Harvard Catalyst. The eCD will apply principles and practices of instructional design and adult learning theory in the design, creation, and delivery of online courses for the clinical and translational science community.

The eCD will lead the development of self-directed, asynchronous courses and online resources. The eLearning Course Designer will utilize and adhere to the curriculum development processes used in the Harvard Catalyst Postgraduate Education program (backwards curriculum development using Bloom’s taxonomy as the foundation) while meeting project deadlines. The eCD will manage the planning, development, design, and implementation of the online courses in their portfolio. The eLearning Course Designer also monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the content developed and directs the iterative revision process for their assigned online courses.

This position will work in tandem with other members of the course development team that include media producers, online course coordinators, and faculty. The incumbent works closely with faculty director(s) to manage the design and implementation process of online and blended courses within his/her assigned portfolio. For each assigned course, the eLearning Course Designer works closely with the faculty director(s) to: envision the logistical processes necessary for effective course implementation; manage curricular discussion and planning meetings; plan and execute the administrative functions necessary for a successful course/program; research and recommend to the curricular planning committees possible faculty lecturers for courses; issue invitations to potential faculty lecturers and discuss course context with faculty who accept invitations; draft expected learning outcomes that align with course goals; facilitate conference calls among course directors and each faculty member to discuss session content; screen course participants for eligibility; analyze feedback from prior course participants and faculty, conduct a debrief with the planning committee, and propose curricular changes for future course development; research existing course formats and methodologies to create and maintain innovation in course delivery; and identify obstacles to building integrated course components.

The incumbent will drive the project while interacting with and managing faculty content experts responsible for identifying and shaping course content. The eLearning Course Designer is responsible for leading multiple projects concurrently, leveraging internal/external resources to meet tight deadlines.

The eCD (1) takes initiative to improve processes and document best practices to enhance the effectiveness of the Education Program, and (2) creates and submits to the Senior Program Manager of Online Learning an estimated yearly budget for the courses/programs for which s/he is assigned.


Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent), preferably in the field of Instructional Design or a related field within education, plus at least two years working experience is required. Advanced education can count towards work experience. Excellent project management, interpersonal, and communication skills. Experience working with faculty content experts and communicating with multiple stakeholders. Competency with Microsoft Office and related software applications is a plus. Familiarity with Harvard processes and procedures a plus. Desired candidates will be able to work seamlessly across teams, and with high-level faculty content experts, and possess the following qualities: strong organizational skills; ability to prioritize and handle a wide range of tasks simultaneously while meeting deadlines; ability to compromise but maintain the goals and objectives of a project; good judgment; sense of initiative; and, strong attention to detail.
