Educational Programs Manager

Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University - Cambridge, Massachusetts - Full time

The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University seeks an experienced and dynamic Educational Programs Manager to lead our events team and educational programs including our summer internship program. The Educational Manager will thrive in a committed, collaborative, and tight-knit environment that encourages creativity and humor and supports its community members' independent and collective goals. The Manager will report to the Administrative Director and lead the Events team of one or two people.

They will develop a keen eye for current BKC themes and help the events and programs teams, in collaboration with Communications, to select, highlight and implement events and programs accordingly. They will work with the Events Strategy Committee to determine which events will be implemented, help event organizers to define the exact requirements of the events, lead their team to implement events, and continuously examine and improve the events process.

Additionally, the Manager will lead the annual summer internship program for university, law and graduate students, including helping the Center redesign the program. They will support project and program teams to develop internship descriptions, run the application process in collaboration with participating teams, and develop and run the internship program, again in collaboration with participating teams.

The right candidate for this role has high interpersonal, communication, and facilitation skills, proven professional acumen, and the ability to collaborate with all levels and parts of the diverse Berkman Klein community. They are driven by a desire to support others in developing connections and building collaborative projects. They will seek to make events and programs successful for all participants from a range of backgrounds and across physical locations. They will be excited to bring our distributed community together using virtual tools and techniques. The Manager will engage people before, during and after events and programs and will help program and event leaders to do the same. They will have an interest in key issues in the Internet & Society space and an ability to support conversation about these topics.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

Programs and Training

  • Lead the student summer internship program. This includes organizing job descriptions and candidate vetting, hiring and onboarding interns, developing the plan for weekly programming, engaging faculty, fellows, and staff to lead the program sessions, and evaluating program success.
  • Be a contributing member of the Programs team, which is revamping our approach to programs. Contribute both as a thought partner and implementer. Bring to the team perspectives on learner-centric models of education.
  • Be a community leader among staff, community and beyond, helping our passionate and supportive team and community to improve how we deliver events and programming including virtual programming.

Events Development

  • Nurture the development of events from inception to implementation. Be a partner to projects and program in creating dynamic and participatory physical and virtual events.
  • Help event proposers to understand how to make their events most successful, given the resources available, the goals of the particular event, and the current topical themes of the Center.
  • Oversee the Events Strategy Team, maintaining proactive and responsive process and communication, running Events Strategy meetings, ensuring team documents and follows up on decisions and guiding debriefs and reflections afterwards.
  • Help to spearhead virtual programs, interactions and events and virtual participation in physical events.
  • Manage the events logistics staff to enable smooth, efficient planning and implementation processes
  • With the guidance of the Administrative Director, monitor and oversee the Events budget.

Collaboration across the Center, University and beyond

  • Work closely with the Communications team to ensure that our programs and community work is shared within our extended community, audiences outside our community and the public at large. Implement consistent and effective communications about all events hosted by the Center including email campaigns, social media, posters, and internal communications.
  • Conduct outreach to include with other centers, departments and student groups on campus and organizations outside of the university with particular attention to the diversity of voices and opportunities for collaboration.
  • Communicate with a range of scholars about events and programs.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree plus 5 years of related experience.

Additional Qualifications

  • Passion for and experience with running events and programs.
  • Previous management experience and excellent management skills and processes, with growth mindset toward personnel development.
  • Excellent communication skills including writing clear and inviting internal and external emails, event planning documents, facilitation guides and similar.
  • Able to skillfully facilitate peer-to-peer conversations through email discussions, conference calls, online tools, and in-person meetings.
  • Have a training mindset and be an excellent listener.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Experience in developing learning opportunities and programs, which could include curriculum development, learner-centered teaching, facilitating workshops or other informal learning environments, developing or teaching blended courses, developing content for LMSs, e-learning, project-based learning, problem-based learning, inquiry.
  • Experience with facilitating community events and programs with online tools such as videoconference, online learning platforms, etc. (You may love Slack, Etherpad, Google Hangouts or other community-enabling tools.)
  • Comfortable getting people set up with presentation and communication technologies.
  • Online learning tools and programs experience preferred.
  • Experience running programs for university and graduate students desirable, but not required.
  • Strong interest in BKC topics and related current events highly desirable.

As with all Berkman positions, this is a term appointment currently expected to extend through June 30, 2021, with a strong possibility of renewal based on continued funding and business needs.
