Education Editorial Director

Gibbs Smith Education is an award-winning educational publisher in Utah that is passionate about history and social studies. We are seeking an Editorial Director to oversee program/product development and implementation.

The Editorial Director is responsible for managing the team of editors, curriculum developers, and designers to deliver both print-based and digital educational programs that align with current state standards and academic practices. The ideal candidate has K-12 classroom experience, curriculum development or editorial experience, and a passion for social studies education.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Lead the Education team in its vision and purpose as an educational publisher.
  • Build positive relationships with key stakeholders, including state personnel, district personnel, state historical societies, state geographic alliances, and other key stakeholders in each market.
  • Stay current on the latest educational research and best practices.
  • Ensure quality of work prior to publishing, including factual/historic accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Ensure that our programs are designed to lead to results that benefit teachers, students, and the company.
  • Identify opportunities for new programs and products.
  • Work with the Managing Editor to build, train and maintain a team, both internal and external, of dedicated professionals to provide the needed deliverables in content creation, research, editorial, design, and curriculum.
  • Inspire, motivate, engage, manage, and mentor staff.
  • Work with Sales and Marketing team to coordinate releases, promotions, conference exhibits, sales presentations, professional development efforts, and other special events.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Expertise working in the education field, including an appreciation for the value of social studies education.
  • Understanding of current trends in K-12 pedagogy and the benefits of effective social studies education in developing the critical thinking skills necessary to foster civic engagement.
  • Understanding of key issues facing teachers, students, and administrators and how to shape our materials to address them.
  • Strong writing ability, can “turn around” editorial expediently.
  • Outstanding copyediting/rewriting, organizational, and time-management skills, as well as good aesthetic sensibilities and solid knowledge of history (especially US history).
  • Familiarity with Chicago style.
  • Skill with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign.
  • Proficiency using project management tools like Asana, Trello, and Slack.
  • Ability to implement plans for print and digital content in tandem.
  • Excellent organization skills, time management, and attention to detail.
  • Desire and ability to wear multiple hats and manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Team orientation; “no job is too small” mentality.
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a field related to education, social studies and/or editorial.
  • Three- to-five years of work experience in K-12 education, preferably elementary and middle school.

This position is full-time with a complete benefits package and some travel required. The job is in our Kaysville, Utah office and reports to the Chief Executive Officer.
