Director, STEAM Middle School Program

The Organization

Foundation for a College Education (FCE), located in East Palo Alto, California, is a nonprofit organization that offers a comprehensive college access and success program. FCE’s mission is to increase the number of students of color from East Palo Alto and similar communities who graduate from a four-year college or university. FCE provides academic support and college counseling to students in grades six through college graduation.

The Position

The STEAM Middle School Program Director reports to FCE’s Director of Programs. S/he oversees all aspects of the STEAM middle school program. The program exposes students to science, technology, engineering, arts and math-related activities and opportunities. STEAM is designed to help students to develop the curiosity, persistence, and resilience that will allow them to develop the academic and personal skills to transition successfully to high school.

The Program Director will also help with the transition of STEAM student who matriculate to our high school program, College Bound.

Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Admissions: Recruit, interview and admit 15 -18 5th graders to enter STEAM as rising 6th graders. Recruit, interview and admit any additional students for rising 7th and/or rising 8th grade.
  • Student Program: Plan and develop a curriculum for academic year and summer STEAM designed to improve academic skills and promote student curiosity, persistence and resilience through project-based learning activities; arrange monthly student field trips during the academic year and weekly field trips during the summer.
  • Parent Program: Develop and maintain relationships with STEAM families; develop curriculum for and lead monthly parent meetings on a variety of topics related to academic support and achievement, emotional resilience and effective parenting.
  • Administrative: Recruit and train STEAM staff; meet with STEAM and FCE Director of Programs on a regular basis and College Bound staff as needed; manage attendance records and communication; keep laptops and printers in working order; arrange for maintenance of site; order supplies and snacks as necessary.
  • High School Transition Program: With College Bound staff, design and implement workshops or programs to facilitate students’ successful transition to high school.

Program Monitoring

Program Participation: Track student and family participation in FCE’s STEAM Program to help ensure that students are meeting the expectations and goals of the program.

Student Progress: Monitor and assess student academic and social-emotional progress, including: procuring grades and reviewing transcripts, meeting regularly with students and families, and identifying and meeting individual student needs.

Filing and Database Systems: Maintain an accurate filing and electronic student data system; conduct an annual internal audit to maintain data integrity; execute monthly and ad hoc reports.

  • Able to interact with students, parents and community members from diverse cultural, economic, educational and vocational backgrounds.
  • Knowledgeable about issues surrounding the education of underserved youth and well-versed in the K-16 education system; knowledgeable about STEAM content and curriculum; able to meet the challenges of helping students and their families with academic, personal, and social achievement issues.
  • A strong leader.
  • An excellent communicator and team member who enjoys motivating and inspiring youth.
  • A self-starter who is flexible, energetic, creative and thrives in a fast-paced work environment.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree required.
  • Minimum of five years experience working with middle and secondary students.
  • Excellent writing, public speaking and interpersonal skills.
  • Attentive to detail, extremely well organized and capable of managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Word and Excel.
  • Fluency in oral and written Spanish.

Compensation
