Director, Product Management, Education

PBS - Arlington, Virginia - Full time

The Product Manager is responsible for the complete lifecycle of digital products from discovery and ideation to strategy, development and maintenance across current and emerging technology platforms for the education market. The PM will maximize the quality and impact of digital service offerings for educators with the intention of helping PBS deliver on its vision of being the most trusted, valued and supported media organization in America.

Essential duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with the Children’s Media and Education team leadership to develop PBS Education’s Digital Product Strategy as a multi-faceted strategy to serve the diverse needs of teachers and informal educators
  • Communicate with a wide range of colleagues across PBS to advocate for the PBS Education Product Strategy across the PBS organization
  • Build and manage individual product roadmaps for all PBS Education digital assets
  • Be an advocate for the end user (Formal and Informal Educators) in every aspect of PBS Education Products
  • Work with team members across PBS KIDS, Parents and Education to identify opportunities to align and maximize parallel efforts
  • Work with stakeholders to define clear objectives and goals tied to overall PBS business strategies for new and existing products
  • Lead Product partnership efforts with external companies, schools, non-profits, etc. that align with Education Product goals.
  • Development and management of digital products focused on the educational market
  • Manage tactical implementation of product features and improvements based on high level roadmap, including management of deliverables and timelines
  • Define and clarify functional product requirements to provide adequate direction to design, engineering, QA and operational staff
  • Work closely with various customer constituencies to collect feedback and provide product updates and training
  • Identify and track technical issues, and work with engineering, QA, and other teams to resolve them
  • Define and track product metrics for the purpose of understanding and improving product behavior and performance
  • Help identify and evaluate business and technology opportunities for various products and platforms
  • Perform market and customer analysis to define product strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats
  • Act as a team lead and represent Product, Design and Technology at the Education Team Leads meetings.
  • Evaluate product partnership opportunities and actively manage relationships with partner organizations
  • Work with leadership across PBS Digital and PBS Education to develop product development processes that efficiently utilize resources and have the ability to dynamically scale up and down.
  • Collaborate with other product teams to develop problem discovery, validation and user-centered design processes

Requirements for success:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in product management for consumer software products and/or services
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or other technology disciplines
  • Experience with educational products and education market strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated success defining and launching excellent products
  • Experience managing a product across all phases of its lifecycle, from conception through business plan development, requirements gathering, development, QA, launch, and user testing
  • Demonstrated experience working with multiple functional disciplines (including management, users, content producers, member stations, engineering, QA and operations) to insure the on-time delivery of software products and services
  • Experience working with and managing remote development teams preferred
  • Experience with agile software development methodology preferred
  • Hands-on software development experience would be a plus, but is not required
  • Strong technical knowledge, including familiarity with web client technologies such as HTML, server side technologies such as Python and Node, and mobile applications for iOS and Android
  • Analytical approach to problem-solving with ability to understand and assess complex issues and recommend solutions
  • Ability to analyze and understand user needs and behavior in a digital product, and translate those findings into features and improvements
  • Self-motivated personality comfortable managing multiple schedules and deliverables while coordinating with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Ability to develop plans, capture and analyze data, summarize results and implement initiatives based on findings
  • Smart and quick thinker, with ability to thrive in a creative environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to converse effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to influence cross-functional teams without formal authority
  • Experience with web, video, and mobile technologies strongly preferred
  • Experience working with disparate onshore and offshore product development would be a plus
