The Office of Digital Education reports to the Chancellors of the CU Denver and CU Anschutz Medical Campuses and was created in early 2018 to accelerate the growth of CU Online and digital education initiatives more broadly. The investment by the campuses in the Office of Digital Education, combined with recent commitments focused on online education by the University of Colorado Board of Regents, make this a rare and exciting opportunity.

Nature of Work:

The Office of Digital Education is accepting applications for The Director of Online Student Success, a full-time (non-classified) position. The Director of Online Student Success for Digital Education has primary responsibility for the leadership, management, strategic direction, and administrative oversight of the student success department. Its initiatives are focused on improving engagement, satisfaction, retention and graduation rates, and impacting career outcomes for students in a variety of fully online undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs for the University of Colorado’s Denver and Anschutz Medical Campuses. This position collaborates closely with administrative and academic units across both campuses and the University of Colorado System office to design and deliver online student engagement and support strategies.

The Director of Online Student Success reports to the Vice Chancellor for Enterprise Development.

The Director of Online Student Success supervises full-time and part-time university staff.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Leads, develops, and facilitates the work of a strong student success team, providing the inspirational leadership necessary to mentor and motivate a high performing team
  • Develops, oversees, and evaluates a comprehensive and transformative, annual and long-range, student support plan to include retention, engagement, completion, student development, and cross-campus partnerships
  • Advises and collaborates with the Division of Access and Achievement, the Office of Information Technology, academic units and all other relevant university departments to enhance retention and student success initiatives for fully-online students
  • Continuously ensures alignment of communication and processes with the online recruitment operation, priorities, and organization to achieve the growth goals of CU Online and the Office of Digital Education
  • Establishes and is responsible for ongoing analysis of key recruitment and engagement performance measures and corresponding reporting to multiple constituents
  • Implements and maintains current trends and best practices in online student engagement, and student success
  • Develops, maintains, and delivers a co-curricular orientation experience for new fully-online students aimed at helping them successfully and confidently transition to be an online student at our university
  • Develops, maintains, and delivers a co-curricular experience for fully-online students aimed at helping them clearly articulate the career relevant knowledge gained from the academic curriculum
  • Responsible and accountable for the analysis of fiscal and human resources strategy required to achieve department objectives including hiring, compensation, termination, and performance management of subordinate employees
  • Advances the mission of the Office of Digital Education through a commitment to partnership, excellence, innovation, and care for the well-being of students and team members

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position has been established and is commensurate with skills and experience. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.The University of Colorado offers a full benefits package. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree
  • Two (2) to five (5) years of experience related to student success
  • Experience designing, developing, and delivering student support services
  • Experience working across internal departments to develop and execute directions and plans
  • Experience and skills in developing and implementing student-centered programs
  • Two (2) plus years’ experience with direct report management

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in a field related to this position
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience related to student success within the online sector
  • Experience designing, developing, and delivering student support services for students who cannot physically be on campus
  • Experience in higher education academic advising and familiarity with the NACADA framework and its core competencies preferred
  • Working knowledge and understanding of FERPA
  • Possess an in-depth knowledge of higher education student success best practices that include, but are not limited to recruitment, retention, persistence, orientation, first-year experience, early intervention, degree planning, academic advising, and career development
  • Sales experience
  • Experience supporting online students
  • Demonstrated ability to build and foster relationships with key campus student services

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution including diverse audiences (students, faculty, staff, and alumni)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administrators as required
  • Outstanding interpersonal relationship skills
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, including ability to set priorities, manage simultaneous projects, and complete projects on time
  • Organized, detail oriented, and able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment where projects run side-by-side
