Director of Technology, Education

PBS - Arlington, Virginia - Full time

Director of Technology, Education

Team: PBS Digital

Status: Full-time/Exempt/Project (This position is fully funded until August 2020)

For over 50 years, PBS has been a leader in delivering educational media that helps prepare kids for school and life. At PBS, the Children’s Media & Education group works extensively with early childhood education experts, pre-K-12 educators, advisors, classroom practitioners and award-winning producers to create developmentally appropriate shows, games and activities, as well as professional learning experiences and classroom resources.

PBS LearningMedia, our core ed-tech product, is a digital media library that helps educators across the country reimagine classroom learning, transform teaching, and more creatively engage students. Teachers are eager to engage learners with hands-on resources that promote deep understanding of complex topics, motivate struggling students and enable differentiated learning. Everyday, thousands of educators look to PBS LearningMedia to meet their classroom needs.

To continue innovating across the pre-k-12 education landscape, PBS Education is seeking a Director of Technology. This role is part of a Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) planning grant for PBS LearningMedia. This body of work and final plan will help determine the future of PBS Education’s product strategy. Our hope is to secure a subsequent grant that will allow this role to continue to guide the technical implementation of this new product strategy beyond the initial grant period. A successful candidate has extensive experience in web-based application development, architecting technology implementations, and providing technical leadership.

Essential duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Partner with Product Management to define the technical strategy for PBS Education, which serves pre-K-12 educators as well as families and caregivers. This includes PBS LearningMedia and future professional learning offerings.
  • Work across the different phases of the software development lifecycle including estimating level-of-effort, identifying the best technical approach, prototyping, guiding the implementation, deploying, documenting, debugging, and supporting features.
  • Participate and contribute to stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives at the agile team level and up.
  • Research, document, note trade-offs and recommend potential solutions around future product features.
  • Deliver timely, high quality solutions to specific engineering problems.
  • Architect new systems and changes to existing systems to support new functionality.
  • Evaluate and select tools and vendors to meet project needs without creating unnecessary technical debt.
  • Mentor other engineers via design discussions and code reviews.
  • Work collaboratively across the engineering department to ensure standard methodologies and processes are followed.
  • Help guide policies and practices to transform PBS into a leader in student data privacy and ensure that security practices are properly implemented.

Requirements for success:

  • Great communication, including thoughtful listening skills, the ability to express complex ideas clearly and succinctly, and the ability to communicate well in writing.
  • A thoughtful, process-oriented approach to development and engineering, such as continuous delivery, and agile software development.
  • 5+ years of industry coding/infrastructure experience.
  • Technology-agnostic and pragmatic engineering sensibility, focused on solving key problems, not the tools.
  • Experience working with product managers and business stakeholders in defining the technical strategy for a product suite.
  • Experience defining the architecture of modern web based products.
  • Experience integrating with external web services and identity providers (e.g. Google Classroom, AWS MediaConvert, OAuth 2.0, and Open LTI)
  • Proficiency in at least two commonly used programming languages, such as Python, Ruby, Go, Javascript, Java, etc. and the associated ecosystem.
  • Initiative with a bias for action.
