Director of Strategic Communications

CodePath is a national non-profit that is reprogramming higher education to create the most diverse generation of software engineers, CTOs, and founders. We deliver industry-vetted courses and career support centered on the needs of Black, Latino/a, Indigenous, and low-income students. Our students train with senior engineers, intern at top companies, and rise together to become the tech leaders of tomorrow.

Founded in 2017, CodePath has taught over 20,000 students and delivered courses across over 85 universities. We are supported by some of the largest and most well-respected organizations, including Andreessen Horowitz, Blue Meridian Partners, Cognizant Foundation, Comcast, Google, Meta, Salesforce, Walmart, and Workday, among others.

We are currently targeted to serve 10,000+ students a year nationwide as of 2023, and are planning to scale up to ~100,000 students a year by 2030.

About the Role:

Location: Remote, United States

Duration: FTE

Reports To: VP of Marketing

Compensation: $125,000 to $150,000 per year

The Director of Strategic Communications will help further CodePath's mission to create the most diverse generation of software engineers, CTOs, and founders while producing proven economic mobility pathways for our country's underserved populations. You will shape our communications strategy and narrative as we share our story of reprogramming higher education and the stories of our 20,000+ students who have overcome systemic barriers to access the tech industry.

As a member of the Marketing team, you will build and lead external communications for CodePath to generate positive brand awareness among the top 20% of the world's most influential donors and institutions. You will work closely with Marketing, Leadership, Fundraising, and others across the US to help us develop a compelling communications narrative, and you will source new opportunities for CodePath to expand our reach and influence through effective storytelling. You will also lead the management of our external PR partners and identify new opportunities to maximize CodePath's existing PR resources. The content you create will convince impact leaders to fund our programs to drive systemic change in tech and compel engineering leaders to forge new partnerships with us so we can 10x our impact and serve 100,000 college computer science students in the next five years.

This is an equal parts strategy and execution role. We are looking for someone who has the vision to help us craft our annual and 5-year communications strategies, and someone who can roll up their sleeves to craft VIP-facing emails. You're always on the hunt for compelling stories, and you're savvy with both mainstream media outlets as well as new and emerging platforms.

Key Activities:

  • Refresh the overall messaging and content strategy for CodePath in conjunction with our PR agency and the CodePath leadership team. As the audience expert, you'll guide messaging to deliver the most significant impact and resonance
  • Develop five-year CodePath communications north stars while managing the annual communications calendar
  • In collaboration with our PR and media relations partners, lead a robust media relations function, delivering exceptional results by nurturing solid relationships with broadcast, technology, and business
  • Oversee the development of new opportunities for CEO/Team thought leadership, including conference placement, talking points, and internal coaching
  • Oversee the Social Media Manager and branded corporate social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram
  • Partner with CodePath’s leadership team and build out the spokespersons bench, leading the development of talking points, interactions with the media, and presentations at major conferences
  • Create, implement, and maintain analytics dashboards to measure impact. Report results to senior leadership on a regular basis


  • Minimum 7+ years of experience in PR, communications, and marketing. Agency experience is preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated experience leading communication and content with an insights-led approach and results to back it up
  • Passionate and instinctive storyteller with excellent content-generation skills across a variety of channels—and a knack for distilling complex stories into a simple yet compelling narrative
  • An open and effective communicator across different audiences (i.e. college students vs. leadership), both internally and externally
  • Exceptional project management skills, attention to detail, and ability to juggle multiple competing priorities effectively
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Technical proficiency a major plus (i.e. former CS student, has coding/programming experience or a tech enthusiast, i.e. you enjoy reading WIRED magazine and immersing yourself in the latest tech trends)
  • Tech startup experience also a plus

Pay range$125,000—$150,000 USD
