Who we are

We believe “the science of reading” is neither a momentary trend nor a call for phonics-only instruction. Rather, it is a definitive body of research that articulates the skills, knowledge, and types of instruction children need to become skilled readers. While a pathway for equitable reading instruction exists, bringing the research into everyday practice can feel daunting and at times overwhelming. This is why Lit is on a mission to translate the “science of reading” into scalable, research-aligned programs and replicable practices so educators can focus on tapping into student potential and achieving equitable reading outcomes for students, particularly Black, Latino/a, and students currently experiencing poverty. 

We are looking for a Director of School Support who wants to join Lit to:

  • improve reading ecosystems, adult practice, and student outcomes by supporting educators in aligning program and practice to research
  • disrupt dominant narratives about reading achievement in racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse student populations
  • ensure that there is no daylight between our pursuit of research and instructional equity

The opportunity

Lit is looking for a skilled and dynamic educator to serve as the Director of School Support. The Director of School Support will report to our Executive Director and will evolve the vision for, coach, and manage our growing direct-to-partner school service team and ensure coherent and high-quality support across partners. This is the perfect role for someone who has strong instructional learning design skills, experience scaling programs, demonstrated success at aligning service offerings and sales, and enjoys coaching and leading teams.

What you'll do

  • Refine and build the core model that drives Lit’s service offerings
    • Evaluate current offerings through the lens of partner demand, feasibility of execution, sustainability of design, and achievement of logic model outcomes
    • Design and codify the next evolution of Lit’s school support model to ensure interactions achieve outcomes and measurement approaches assess outcomes in a logical and coherent manner
    • Build and adapt scalable service models to fit a variety of contexts and constraints
    • Ensure Lit has the measures needed to adequately evaluate the core logic model and our impact across partners
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on creating frameworks, tools, and resources that support the implementation of Lit’s core school service model offerings
    • Work with the Lit Learning, Internal Learning team to develop the frameworks, tools, and resources that the school support team will use to set and pursue goals with partners, such as:
      • Coaching frameworks, tools, and resources used for diagnosis, goal-setting, planning, and observation, and progress monitoring
      • Trainings that complement the school support model for team members to use in the development of school and systems leaders
      • Trainings that assist the school support team in acquiring skills and knowledge that will increase their effectiveness with their partners
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of tools and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to refine them based on learnings
  • Work cross-functionally to conduct research and design cycles that produce tools and resources that can be disseminated to the wider field
  • Lead and manage the school support team to achieve deep impact on student learning across partners
    • Collaborate with the Executive Director to set and sustain the vision for the school support team and ensure all team members provide Lit’s partners with rigorous, coherent, and responsive support
    • Manage and coach a growing team of Instructional Specialists--our service support team members that provide direct support to schools and systems across the country
    • Foster a positive and healthy team culture that actively reflects Lit’s core values
    • Build relationships with partners to ensure progress and satisfaction with Lit’s service offerings
  • Train school-based coaches on tools and resources to ensure coherent, informed, and invested use
    • Provide professional learning to school team members on the effective use of frameworks, tools, and resources
    • Observe how school-based coaches are using frameworks, tools, and resources in the field and leverage observations to provide in-the-moment as well as team-wide feedback
  • Drive short- and long-term core model offering design to increase impact and ensure strong alignment between sales and service
    • Ensure Lit’s strategic growth team has a strong understanding of the purpose and approach to our school-based offerings
    • Ensure that the right tools are in place to transition partners from sales to partnership management to coaching execution
    • Engage in regular feedback loops with service and sales teams to understand effectiveness of existing offerings on partner outcomes, satisfaction, renewal, and expansion and to get partners' needs feedback that could inform the offering
    • Support the Director of Strategic Growth with sales conversations with future and current partners on an as-needed basis
  • Contribute to growing and scaling Lit’s impact within the education sector
    • Serve on internal teams that support Lit’s growth and scale our work to to strengthen our impact in schools and across the sector
    • Invest in internal and external professional learning opportunities that deepen knowledge and sharpen skills
    • Represent and promote Lit at external events and build relationships with new and existing partners
  • You are someone who
    • Is an experienced PK - 12 leader that brings a deep understanding of instructional leadership at the school and system level as well as experience modeling and scaling services across a diverse range of school system types
      • Has 5+ years of measurable achievement in a senior leadership role, including coaching and leading teams to routinely outperform performance metrics
      • Experience building logic models, service offerings, and measurement tools that are replicable and adaptable across many school and system contexts
      • Experience developing or adapting tools such as rubrics, observation frameworks, or other outcome measures
      • Knowledgeable and experienced in designing, facilitating and assessing the quality of adult learning professional learning experiences that result in changes to practice
    • Is a strategic thinker, planner, and executer
      • Is well-organized, has a high attention to detail, and is deadline-driven
      • Has strong analytical skills, enjoys systems thinking, and is a problem solver
      • Has excellent written and verbal communication skills
      • Ability to present ideas, processes, and metrics in a simple and clear manner

    While we do not expect candidates to meet all qualifications, we are unable to consider applicants who do not have experience building logic models, service offerings, and measurement tools for a service-oriented team.

    What you’ll receive

    Compensation: This is a full-time staff, exempt position with an annual salary range of up to $160,000. A compensation offer is based on relevant years of experience in relation to the position as well as location. Because of our strong commitment to equity and growth, Lit does not negotiate or place compensation offers at the top of the range.

    Location: This role is 100% remote. While our team is distributed across the country, we believe in balancing productive remote work with moments of in-person collaborative work with our partners and colleagues.

    Travel: Travel is an essential part of how we support our partners, collaborate with our team, and fulfill our mission. Schedule and timing for travel may vary by team and role, and may change as the company’s business needs continue to evolve. Expect to travel up to 40% of the year.
