Director of Research and Evaluation

GBH is a public media leader, based in Boston. GBH Education ( is a division within GBH, whose mission is to work with communities to research, develop, and distribute quality media-integrated resources to support the equitable learning and development of children and youth. We aim to achieve positive outcomes for children and young people through research-based programming, partnerships with educators, communities, and community-based organizations. In particular, we are guided by an equity compass and seek to respond to specific community needs, include communities in the development of media and educational initiatives, and represent diverse people and stories throughout. We serve educators and learners in both in-school (prek-12) and out-of-school (informal) settings, and are co-leads of PBS LearningMedia (, public media’s national, free service of digital learning resources that is typically accessed by over a million users a month.


GBH Education seeks a Director of Research & Evaluation to lead the development of our research and evaluation strategy and implement it. Reporting to the Executive Director of Education, the Director will be a key member of GBH Education’s senior team. This role will manage the department’s research and evaluation efforts across school-based, home-based, and community programs. In addition, the Director of Research will function as a crucial resource for research-related matters at GBH Education, including support to our content, production, community engagement, development, and marketing teams. The Director will also serve as a thought leader and external representative of GBH Education to the larger educational technology/media, child development, and learning science communities. Oversee research and evaluation efforts across the department

  • Develop and implement plans to define and measure the impact of educational initiatives at GBH, especially among underserved populations
  • Partner with staff within departments to execute program/project evaluations
  • Source and manage external partners and contractors who conduct research
  • Supervise junior staff on research, data collection, analysis and reporting tasks
  • Produce and distribute impact/efficacy evaluation reports, metrics, and dashboards
  • Coordinate formative research and product testing across projects, with peers, direct reports, and external contractors
  • Oversee web or mobile analytics and other metrics
  • Manage market research as needed

Manage research curation for internal use

  • Maintain compilations of statistics and trends on topics of organizational priority and importance to the field, primarily for internal use and reference
  • Monitor the presentation of research and data in GBH Education materials
  • Conduct literature reviews for grant proposal development, executive staff speaking engagements, marketing events, or other needs

Partner with Education senior team on strategy development, program definition, and fund-raising

  • Help define new programs and refine existing initiatives with attention to educational effectiveness and impact, especially among underserved populations
  • Support grant development and assist in writing grant proposals, serving as PI or Co-PI, if appropriate
  • Serve as consulting thought partner to content, community engagement, and product development teams
  • Support Executive Director and senior team on organization-wide initiatives, as appropriate

Thought Leadership

  • Advise/train internal teams on research and substantive topics as needed
  • Position and promote GBH Education in research and academic fields
  • Liaise with Marketing, Communications, etc. to distribute and publicize our research
  • Serve as thought leader representing GBH Education to external audiences


  • Deep understanding about key issues in the fields of kids' media and technology and/or K-12 edtech -- from academic research and practice/industry perspectives
  • Exceptional research skills, including research design, advanced inferential statistics, and qualitative research methods
  • Knowledge about K-12 education, learning, child development, and culturally responsive research
  • Excellent communication skills for academic and lay, non-specialized audiences
  • Experience translating research and complex concepts for non-expert audiences
  • Technical skills - SPSS/Stata or other statistical analysis software, other data collection and analysis tools (e.g., Qualtrics, Tableau), current workplace technologies and social media
  • Ability to work independently and autonomously but also function well in a collaborative team setting, working across functions and different types of people
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and produce quick, high quality results
  • Flexibility and willingness to "roll up your sleeves" to support nonprofit mission and ethos
  • Excellent attention to detail, and organizational skills
  • Able to think analytically and synthesize vast amounts of information


Master's degree in child development, education, media research, or related field or equivalent work experience. Minimum 8-10 years’ experience conducting and managing complex research studies
