The Opportunity: 

The Director of Research and Analytics is responsible for leveraging Aspire’s data infrastructure to support decision-making at all levels of the organization. You will ensure that teachers, principals, our home and regional offices, and senior leadership team have a set of actionable, accurate, and accessible tools by which they can easily answer questions and forecast needs. In addition, you will support the continuous improvement of our instructional and operating model by championing the use and analytical support of improvement science. Success in this work will require the development of positive, collaborative, cross-functional relationships across the organization with the aim of clearly understanding organizational needs and delivering high quality solutions.

This position will be based in Oakland, CA.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Enable Data Driven Action
  • Hold the vision and roadmap for the continuous improvement of our analytical tools and use of data science to improve forecasting
  • Identify key work streams that benefit from data and work cross-functionally to ensure teams have the information they need to improve decision-making
  • Ensure the adoption of all data products through high quality training and support
  • Identify and implement best practices in data visualization and reporting
  • Lead data governance efforts to ensure all data elements are high quality and accessible
  • Manage external data sharing relationships and implement efficient systems for sharing data with external parties
  • Support the Continuous Improvement of our Instructional and Operating Models
  • Support the development of logic models that clearly articulate programmatic goals. Conduct improvement research on high impact components with the goal of validating and disproving
  • Champion the evaluative process to test hypotheses and support continuous learning
  • Facilitate conversations for instructional and operational leaders to support them in data driven decision-making across all Aspire data domains
  • Develop a High Performing Team
  • Lead and mentor a team of data analysts and scientists
  • Using your expertise and input from your team, develop professional development plans to ensure the team makes progress towards their professional goals
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship

QUALIFICATIONS:

1) Required knowledge, skills & abilities

  • The ability to mentor a team in creating user-centered data visualizations and end-user tools
  • Proven track record of leadership in attracting, developing, and retaining talented staff who deliver results
  • Demonstrated success in leading initiatives that meet stakeholders’ needs relating to data
  • Knowledge of current practices in data science and their use in K-12 settings
  • Excellent organization, time management and follow-up skills; high sense of urgency; demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects concurrently; ability to work independently
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills with proven track record of building positive relationships and effectively communicating with all levels of an organization
  • Experience doing program evaluation or other forms of improvement science, preferred

2) Minimum educational level:

  • Bachelors Degree or comparable experience required; Masters or Ph.D. in Education or Analytics preferred

3) Experience required:

  • Experience leading teams towards successful releases of products
  • Experience facilitating data driven conversations
  • Experience with Tableau Server or similar products
  • Experience with SQL in a MSSQL or similar environment
  • Experience with Python, R, STATA or other analytical tools
