Director of Policy and Advocacy

New Classrooms - Washington D.C., District of Columbia or Remote - Full time

About the Role

The Director of Policy & Advocacy will contribute to the development of, and execute on strategies to drive policy change in K12 education. In this role, the Director of Policy & Advocacy will partner with states to transform their policy systems to support the work of New Classrooms and our theory of change as well as work to position New Classrooms as a lever of change in the personalized and innovative learning models space.

The ideal candidate for the Director of Policy & Advocacy is an adept networker and bridge builder with experience working within a State Education Agency (SEA), education policy advisor for a Governor’s Office or have significant education experience working with Legislative offices. This candidate will deeply understand the underlying political landscape and complexity of K12 education at both the state and federal levels and has experience managing both the policy and practice of implementation.

The Director of Policy & Advocacy will work to bring decision makers, legislators and key education influencers together in states and regions to share ideas, information and important lessons with the goal to push innovative learning forward and create an educational environment that supports innovative models such as Teach To One, New Classrooms’ Flagship model. This position works closely and reports to the VP of Policy and Advocacy and will work in collaboration with our Partnerships and External Relations teams.

What You Would Do

  • Serve as one of New Classrooms’ primary policy experts by representing New Classrooms in discussions and presentations with external stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local, state and federal elected officials, education influencers, members of policy and advocacy foundations, coalitions, and key partners to advance policy goals for New Classrooms with the VP of Policy and Advocacy
  • Master policy content and context to provide engaging learning opportunities connected to our policy agenda for a wide range of audiences
  • With the support of the VP, Policy and Advocacy, create tools, reports and op eds that promote our policy agenda.
  • In partnership with the VP, Policy and Advocacy lead, develop and execute strategy to advance federal and state policy, and partner with our lobbying arm to cultivate congressional/governmental champions.
  • Building relationships that create and enable opportunities for New Classrooms to share research and program lessons, build broad based understanding and support for policy priorities and foster deeper policy partnerships
  • Support the VP of Policy and Advocacy in providing direct policy support and guidance to senior officials in select states.
  • With the support of the VP of Policy and Advocacy, build coalitions of education stakeholders and policy makers in key states around personalized learning innovations, such as Math Innovation Zones.
  • Support state educational policy leaders on how to orient their space to be more aligned with personalized learning and help implement personalized learning initiatives
  • Position New Classrooms as a critical thought partner in executing personalized learning and to advise on matters related to innovation and personalization more broadly
  • Lead, write, and coordinate policy and advocacy initiatives that are relevant to personalized learning and partner with external partners as necessary to lead change efforts
  • Monitor and identify relevant federal, state and local education policies and prepare appropriate policy analysis, as needed
  • Analyze white papers, laws, publications, briefs, case studies and monitor proposed policy efforts at the local, state, and federal level that will impact New Classrooms’ mission

What We Are Looking For

  • Experience in policy and advocacy at either the local state or national level required, preferably at a state education agency
  • A deep understanding of the levers of change in state systems as well as the pitfalls that can hinder or halt progress
  • In depth knowledge of state and national educational policy, practices, and standards
  • The ability to align education policy with practice
  • An ability to operate (leading, collaborating and executing) in a highly ambiguous environment with high interdependencies.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to work across multiple departments and with both internal and external resources to successfully produce high quality deliverables
  • A whatever-it-takes approach to work and the ability to quickly pivot and draw inspiration from setbacks
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to convey complex policy ideas in a digestible manner to a variety of audience
  • An authentic belief in the power of personalized learning and unfailing optimism about what is possible for kids, the reimagining of the classroom, and ultimately the transformation of the U.S. education system

Role Classification and Benefits

This role is full-time and includes benefits such as rich medical, dental, and vision insurance, 36 paid days off per year (prorated for the period in which you work), paid parental leave, a professional development budget of $375 annually and a quarterly cell phone subsidy.
