Director of People Initiatives

Position Overview

The Director of People Initiatives will ensure KIPP Bay Area Public Schools has the human capital engine to grow new schools and sustain the high-quality teaching, learning, and leadership of our existing schools. Reporting to the Chief People Officer, they will partner directly with the Chief of Schools and regional departments to build and implement a regional strategy for progress monitoring leadership development and scaling of our teacher residency program. The ideal candidate for this critical role thrives on solving problems, navigating ambiguity, developing systems and finding ways to work smarter - not just harder. The Director is someone with a strong track record of successfully launching and managing complex projects, leading outcomes-based planning with cross-functional teams, and building transformative relationships with diverse group stakeholders in a mission-driven organization.

This position is based out of our Regional Support Office (RSO) in downtown Oakland (BART accessible) with frequent travel to our schools and local communities throughout the Bay Area. This full-time exempt position is available immediately.

Roles and Responsibilities

Leadership Pipeline:

  • Partner with Chief of Schools to:
    • Ensure that we are tracking and moving people systematically through leadership pipelines to facilitate the stability and success of our schools and to facilitate the launch of new schools.
    • Build pipelines and programs to attract and onboard external talent
      • Novice Leaders
      • Emerging Leaders
      • School Leader-in-Residence (2 years out from school leadership)
  • Lead Talent Review & Talent Dive processes to align on school leadership trajectories and support school-based talent development.
  • Lead monthly Lead Learning Team meeting that reviews data with and trains Managing Directors of Schools on best talent practices
  • Teacher Residency:
    • Refine program structure: coaching feedback cycles, sustainable school staffing structures, gradual release models.
    • Define criteria for success: Content delivery and Resident progression gateways.
    • Scale teacher residency from the current state (16 residents) to 48 by the summer of 2021.
    • Work with departments (Finance, Special Education, Human Resources, Talent) in the Regional Support Office to successfully support Residents and Mentors
    • Support partnership relationships (Alder School of Education and the University of the Pacific)
    • Support principals who work with Residents.
    • Collect data and provide reports to key constituents including funders and government agencies supporting the program
    • Do “whatever it takes” to ensure the program’s growth and success
    • Manage, coach and lead two direct reports who support the training of Residents

    Induction Programming:

    • Creation of a KIPP Bay Area Public Schools induction program designed to support and guide the new teacher in his or her teaching assignment
      • Align with Academics Team with content (collaborative classroom, Wheatley and Eureka) specifically used in KIPP schools.
      • Engage as Teacher Leadership opportunity
        • that has the same components future leadership training
        • and provides mentorship at our schools
  • In preparation for Program launch, collaborate with the Human Resources, Finance and Academics departments to ensure that we have the appropriate number of teachers with clear CA teaching credentials to support the Program.
