Position Overview

The Director of Information Systems leads the development of systems and solutions responsible for supporting student success and administrative operations at Calbright College, including the digital tools supporting the end-to-end student experience and the data and information systems tracking and reporting on core college operations.

In order to achieve this mission, we focus on building, measuring, and learning on multiple fronts on a regular basis: new models for student support and success, new program offerings, new models for outreach, and new models for post-graduation support. As a fully online institution, each of these efforts has a layer of digital technologies supporting students and staff.

Under the direction of the Chief Technology Officer, the Director of Information Systems plays a key role in leading a team tasked with architecting new systems and solutions for students and staff in order to support and connect these efforts. The Director oversees a number of technical contributors focused on areas including engineering, product management, and user experience design. The Director works closely with others on the technology team and with other departments to understand problems that need to be solved for both students and staff, and ensure that the team is positioned to deliver on needs that align with organizational priorities. The Information Systems team is responsible for developing both student-facing digital experiences and internal tools used to support and connect those experiences. The student experience consists of a sequence of steps required to complete a program, and a wide array of services and resources designed to support the student in accomplishing this. Today, this is done through websites for applicants and for students, marketing automations, integrations between our core systems (including Salesforce CRM, ERP/SIS, LMS) and select third-party tools (including Google Workspace / GSuite, Zoom, Calendly, Slack.)

The Director coordinates efforts and collaborates closely with a number of other leaders and teams including the Information Technology and Early Product Development groups within the Technology Team, the Instruction Team, the Success Team, the Welcome Services Team, and various cross-functional project teams tasked with initiatives detailed in Calbright’s enabling legislation.

As a part of the process of implementing new solutions, the Director of Information Systems is responsible for ensuring that systems are configured such that Calbright can meet applicable reporting requirements (i.e., system, state, federal) with a minimal amount of manual effort. Effectively structuring and managing the streams of data flowing in, out, and between systems is a critical part of this role.

Technology leadership roles at Calbright are hands-on, so we expect the Director to be both a team leader and also a direct contributor.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

The duties below are representative of the role and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed within the scope of work.

  • Manage a small team of technical professionals. Meet regularly, provide productive feedback, and support growth and development of each team member.
  • Set high expectations of team members and offer support as needed towards meeting those expectations.
  • Oversee the security and privacy of student data within and across systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams from across the organization in order to enable and support focused initiatives.
  • Lead engineering projects structured around an Agile development process
  • Translate validated prototypes and plans into operational systems, and implement a prioritized stream of iterative changes to these systems based on post-launch feedback.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
  • Master Data Management across systems.
  • Work with our SIS/ERP vendor to streamline data pipelines and processes for meeting mandatory reporting requirements.
  • Create an increasingly connected and cohesive system composed of a number of distinct underlying technologies, via system integration and automations.

  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Five or more years of experience building software-based solutions
  • Two or more years of management experience
  • Experience working with educational data and data systems
  • Demonstrated experience creating technology-based solutions
  • Desired Qualifications

  • Professional experience in higher education is preferred
  • Experience working with and/or managing product managers, UX designers, and/or engineers
  • Experience building and maintaining data systems.
  • Experience coding with Python and/or other programming languages.
  • Experience designing database schema and writing efficient SQL queries.
  • Experience working with REST APIs.
  • Experience working with and connecting together systems such as: LMS, CRM, SIS, ERP.
  • Experience working in a startup-like environment is a plus.

  • Calbright College is a statewide online college where all instruction and support are done via various online technologies both in person and remotely. Calbright College has administrative offices in Sacramento available for use. When working remotely, employees should be able and willing to use digital communication tools as used by the college, and have the ability to work on a computer for extended periods of time.

  • Requires the ability to function in a remote online instructional environment performing work of primarily a sedentary nature.
