Director of Growth and Admissions

Concourse Education - Richmond, California - Full time

Who we are

At Concourse, we're building a better college experience for low-income and working adults. Concourse students earn a job-relevant BA in as little as 2-3 years, and for less than $10,000 in out-of-pocket costs.

We achieve this by providing each of our students with a personal academic coach, on-demand tutoring, a comfortable and quiet co-working space (which we call the "microcampus"), and a community of peers. Our program is entirely project-based and radically flexible — allowing students to work while they learn — and culminates in a rigorous, job-relevant, and accredited bachelor's degree.

Concourse is a nonprofit startup based in Richmond, CA, and backed by philanthropic funders including Google.org, the Walton Family Foundation, the Doris & Donald Fisher Fund, the Chamberlin Family Foundation, and the Margoes Foundation.

Why we need you

We’re looking for an experienced leader to own our process for finding and enrolling the fellows who will benefit the most from our program. In this work — and at this stage — no two days will be the same, but in general, your mission will be as follows:

Build productive and durable partnerships with community-based organizations, schools, and companies: Working with the rest of the Concourse team (and Jeff, our co-founder, in particular), you’ll build smart and lasting relationships with regional and national organizations to engage prospective fellows. The partnerships you help create will drive impact not only by advancing Concourse’s goals — finding, enrolling, and graduating fellows, most centrally — but also by furthering the work of our partner organizations.

More broadly, find new ways of reaching prospective fellows and of scaling our impact: We have ambitious long-term growth goals, and we’ll need your help to achieve them.

Improve our processes and tools for recruiting, enrolling, and onboarding Concourse fellows: Working across the organization, you’ll help us build a more effective, more efficient, and more delightful enrolling and onboarding experience.

Generally help us improve and grow Concourse to better serve current and future fellows: As a member of our leadership team, you’ll help us navigate strategic and tactical decisions that extend well beyond the world of admissions and recruiting.

Who you are

Characteristics & qualities

- You jump at the opportunity to own big projects, and to decipher ambiguous problems. You are excellent at building and stewarding authentic relationships, and deftly navigate operational and organizational hurdles to make partnerships work.

- You solve problems collaboratively, asking lots of questions and listening before speaking. You don’t assume that you have all the answers, and you are always open to new knowledge, even if it destabilizes your assumptions.

- You care deeply about achieving excellence, but never at the expense of others. You regularly reflect on what could be better—with society, with your organization, with your work. You sweat the small stuff, and are meticulous about documenting, communicating and organizing your work, particularly through technology.

- You want to work in a startup environment, despite (or because of) the uncertainty and change that it brings. You’re hungry to build something amazing. You aren’t afraid to experiment with something new. You have a strong intuition, informed by experience, about what’s important and what’s not. But you also track, monitor, and analyze data to help shape your intuition.

Work experience & background

- You have experience leading significant projects at an early-stage organization.

- You have experience sourcing, developing, and implementing complex partnerships.

- You have experience managing a small (or larger) team.

- You are a keen communicator, writer, and presenter.

- You know how to adapt to different audiences and are just as comfortable in a one-on-one meeting with a student as you are leading a large group workshop.

- Ideally, you have experience working in higher education (or, more broadly, in supporting training for underserved populations). Ideally, you have specific experience in admissions and recruiting, but we’re also very open to sharp generalists interested in a new challenge.

In general, we care less about work experience than your character, potential, and belief in our mission of building a better college experience for low-income and working students.

Why you should apply

As an early member of our team, you’ll have the opportunity to build something new and, in so doing, change the lives of future Concourse fellows. You’ll also be a part of (we hope) fundamentally reimagining higher education in America.

In joining Concourse, you’ll become part of a caring and committed team. We will do all we can to support you professionally and personally. This probably won’t be your last job. But we will do all we can to make it one of the jobs you’re proudest of.
